Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Both teams started hot from the plate as the score was tied at five after three innings of play. The eighth inning would be the difference as the Washington and Lee Generals would push across two runs making the score 7-5 and they held on to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 7-6, in ODAC action.
Senior Kenner Berry led the Eagles at the plate going 2-2 with one home run and three RBIs. Berry's three-run homer in the first inning put the Eagles up 3-2. Chris King and Austin Batten came around to score on the home run.
Anderson Baldy led the Generals at the plate going 2-5, as he answered Berry's home run with one of his own the very next inning. Baldy would tie the game at three all with his solo home run.
Bridgewater answered back in the bottom of second with two runs of their own. Freshman Jacob Talley doubled to center field scoring JT Creed on the play. Matthew LaPrade added an RBI on his groundout to second, scoring Talley.
Two Bridgewater errors in the third led to two unearned runs for Washington & Lee, knotting the game at five all. After the Generals tied the score, both team's pitchers would find their groove as the score stayed locked at five until the eighth inning.
Sophomore Ryan Mason gave up a single and walked another batter to start the eighth as he would give way to Jacob Benfield on the mound. Needing one out to get out of the inning, the Generals would push across the final two runs of the game on wild pitches.
Sophomore Brett Jones would bring the Eagles to within one of the Generals in the bottom of the eight on his RBI single, scoring Berry on the play. A Talley groundout to first stranded runners on third and second to end the inning.
The Eagles were able to get the game tying run on base with a Cameron Stanley's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but that would be the closest the Eagles would get in the game's last frame.
Bridgewater College returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Averett Cougars in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled at 4:00 p.m.
