Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – Bridgewater College opened conference play Saturday afternoon by sweeping a baseball doubleheader from the Roanoke Maroons. The Eagles won the opener 6-3 and shut out the Maroons in the second game, 4-0.
The Eagles received quality starts from Tristan Daywalt and Jordan Showalter to key the sweep. Daywalt pitched six scoreless innings in the first game, allowing six hits while striking out three. He did not walk a batter. Jordan Showalter worked seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits to pick up the win in the second game.
The Eagles jumped on the Maroons for two runs in the first inning to start the opener. With one out, Brandon Poole walked and Kenner Berry followed with a RBI-double to put the Eagles on the board. A throwing error on the double allowed Berry to take third and he scored when Jake Bailey reached on an infield error.
Bridgewater added another run in the second. With one out, Jacob Talley singled and moved to second on Parker Mead's bunt. Talley scored on Austin Batten's double, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh when the Eagles added another run. Poole walked to start the inning and, after Berry was retired on a fly ball to center, Chris King was hit by a pitch. Poole and King pulled off a double steal and Poole scored on Bailey's groundout to push the lead to 4-0.
Two more runs in the eighth put the Eagles on top 6-0. Talley led off with a single and after Mead struck out, Batten was hit by a pitch. Poole then reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed Talley to race home, making the score 5-0. Kenner Berry reached on an intentional walk and King followed with a run-scoring single to make the score 6-0.
The Maroons got to Eagles' reliever Kyle Jones for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Will Decker doubled home a run to put Roanoke on the board and a single by Hermanson chased home another run to make it 6-2. Andrew Berry relieved Jones and allowed a run-scoring single by Cody Shell to pull the Maroons to within 6-3. Andrew Berry retired Sean Guida on a groundout to end the eighth and the lefty pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save as the Eagles closed out the 6-3 victory.
Bridgewater finished the contest with nine hits. Kenner Berry, King and Luke Paczewski contributed two hits each.
The Eagles took an early lead in the second game with single runs in the second and third innings.
King and Brett Jones led off the second with consecutive singles and both advanced on a grounder by Paczewski. King scored on a single to center by JT Creed, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Batten led off the third inning with a single and moved to second on Poole's sacrifice bunt. Batten scored on Kennery Berry's single for a 2-0 Eagles' lead.
The Eagles manufactured another run in the sixth. Paczewski led off with a single and moved to second on Creed's sac bunt. A single by Talley put runners on first and third and Garrison Wright followed with a single to left, scoring Paczewski to make it 3-0.
Bridgewater added its final run in the eighth. Creed walked to start the inning and moved to third on a one-out double by pinch-hitter Matthew LaPrade. Batten was hit by a pitch to load the sacks before a ground ball to second by Poole scored Creed to push the Eagles' lead to 4-0.
The Eagles had 14 hits in the second game, but left 12 runners on base. King led the offense with three hits while Creed, Batten and Kenner Berry added two hits each.
Showalter struck out just one batter in his seven innings of work, but he recorded nine ground-ball outs. Johnny LaVoie came out the bullpen and pitched two hitless innings to finish off the shutout.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to action Tuesday when they host Stevenson. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
