BRIDGEWATER, VA. - The Bridgewater College Volleyball team's season came to an end Wednesday night in Nininger Hall when they lost to the Lynchburg Hornets 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17) in the ODAC Tournament quarter-finals. Coming into the match, Bridgewater was the #4 seed in the tournament and Lynchburg was the #5 seed.
Bridgewater concludes the season with a 19-7 overall record.
Seniors Carleigh Studtmann and Macon Frey finished their final matches as Eagles with strong numbers. Studtmann had nine kills and a .471 kill percentage. Frey finished the match with 26 digs and two service aces.
Studtmann closes her career with 700 kills and 233 total blocks. Frey finishes her career second on Bridgewater's all-time digs list with 1,480. She also finished with 241 assists and 78 service aces.
Victoria Wilson recorded her 1,000 assist during the match. Wilson had 33 assists on the night.
Allison Clark led the Eagles in kills with 10. Rachel Gaston totaled nine kills and Taylor McNeely added 15 digs.
Bridgewater battled their way back from a 22-12 deficit in the first set to bring the score to 24-21 after a 6-0 rally including two service aces from Clark. However, the Hornets were able to hold off the Eagles and win the set by just two points.
Both teams were back-and-fourth in the second set until the Hornets took a 21-17 lead. BC came back again, making the score 23-22, but were not able to take a lead and again lost the set by a small margin.
The Eagles came back strong in set three, taking an early 10-4 with the help of nine Lynchburg errors. Bridgewater never looked back from there, and won the set 25-18 to force a set four.
Bridgewater fought early in the fourth set after falling behind 11-3 and cut Lynchburg's lead to 11-7. However, the Hornets slowly pulled away throughout the set and defeated the Eagles 3-1.
The Eagles 2017 accomplishments include an eight-match winning streak, 12 shutout victories, and hosting an ODAC quarterfinals contest.
