Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bridgewater College opened up a 13-point lead in the first half Saturday, but Guilford College stormed back to defeat the Eagles, 64-48, in ODAC men's basketball action.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Eagles, now 5-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and controlled play for the first 15 minutes. Zach Kopp, a freshman making his first career start, hit two free throws and scored a layup off an assist from Bryce Boggs for a quick 4-0 lead. Kevin Saylor then knocked down a 3-pointer for a 7-0 lead with 17:54 left in the first half.
Alston Thompson put the Quakers on the board with a tip-in, but Keonte Dennis answered with a 3-pointer to give Bridgewater a 10-2 advantage.
Guilford closed to within 10-6 before a free throw by Dennis and layups by Saylor and Kopp pushed the margin to nine, 15-6, with 12:24 on the clock.
Carson Long hit a 3-pointer for the Quakers to make it 17-11, but Jesse Case hit back-to-back 3-pointer to push the Eagles lead to double digits for the first time, 23-11, with 8:46 left in the half.
Case then hit 1-of-2 at the foul line, making the score 24-11 with 7:02 remaining.
The Eagles failed to score for the final seven minutes of the half as they turned the ball over six times and missed all four of their shot attempts. Guilford closed with a 10-0 run over the final 5:43 of the half to pull within three, 24-21, at the break.
The Bridgewater scoring drought continued into the second half as the Eagles scored just one point in the first 4:30 of the half. Boggs hit 1-of-2 at the line and his free throw put the Eagles on top 25-24 with 18:16 left to play.
The Quakers opened up a 31-25 lead before Boggs scored on a layup to pull the Eagles to within four with 14:30 left. The Boggs' layup was the first field goal for the Eagles since the 8:46 mark of the first half - a span of 13 minutes and 16 seconds.
A 3-pointer by Boggs pulled the Eagles to within 34-30 before a 6-0 spurt gave Guilford a 10-point lead, 40-30 with 10:59 left.
Saylor hit a 3-pointer to slice the margin to seven, but the Quakers then hit the Eagles with an 11-0 spurt to open up an 18-point, 51-33, advantage with 6:57 left to play.
Saylor led the Eagles with 13 points and Boggs scored 11. Guilford's Long led all scorers with 23 points.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles host Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
