BC Rally Comes Up Just Short in ODAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. –
The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team rallied in the second half and nearly cut the deficit to one in the final two minutes, but came up short 14-12 in the ODAC quarterfinals at Lynchburg.

Claire Palermo-Re drove with 1:41 remaining to try to get Bridgewater within a goal but Lynchburg goalie Treva Tyson was just able to get a leg to the low shot- her 12th save of the contest.

Palermo-Re did not get the three assists she needed to equal the school single season mark, but did score twice in each half for the Eagles. Senior Jenna Devilbiss led the attack with five goals and an assist.

Tyson prevented the Eagles from coming all the way back into the game on several occasions, and had made early saves on Caroline Fletcher and Anna O'Hara to help the Hornets open up a 5-0 lead.

Bridgewater's Rachel Gruber made her return to the cage from injury and stopped the first two shots she faced, finishing with 11 saves.

Despite a three-goal run at one point, the Eagles trailed 7-3 at halftime. Down 5-0, Palermo-Re finally got the Eagles on the board with 17:53 left on the clock. Just over two minutes later, Devilbiss scored on an eight meter to make it 5-2.

Off a Lynchburg giveaway, the Eagles found Palermo-Re wide open to cut the deficit to two. The hosts would take back momentum with two goals however heading into the break.

Brittney Brown, who had filled in at goalie the past three games but was back on the field today, converted a tough turnaround shot early in the second half to kick off another three-goal Eagle run.

Palermo-Re completed her hat trick right off the draw, and then scored off a good Kristen Stark pass to make it 7-6 Lynchburg with 25:16 remaining.

The Hornets went on a 4-0 run, but two quick Devilbiss goals had the Eagles close again at 11-8. Devilbiss scored again on a free position shot with 12:14 remaining, and Fletcher beat Tyson up high to make it 13-11 Hornets with under five minutes to go.

Kat Francis scored four times for Lynchburg and won seven draw controls in what was one of the few major differences of the game- as the Hornets controlled 18 of 28 draws.

Falling just shy of their first ODAC semifinal appearance since 1998, the Eagles finish the year at 9-9. Lynchburg improves to 12-5 and will face Randolph-Macon on Friday.
