Brown Steps in For Eagles in 14-4 Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team defeated Randolph on Wednesday at the Jopson Athletic Complex, taking a 14-4 decision.

Forced to go to an emergency goalkeeper option, junior Brittney Brown came up big with six saves and just four goals allowed.

Brown caught a shot from Leah Hughes on the game's first possession, and followed with a free position stop to deny Taylor Riccardi.

With the Eagles leading 3-0 Brown made arguably her best save of the game, stopping Chelsea Marciniak from point-blank range right outside the crease. Hannah Bradley hit the crossbar for Randolph soon after.

Jenna Devilbiss scored five times for Bridgewater, while Claire Palermo-Re had a goal and five assists.

After Brown's first save the Eagles counterattacked and scored immediately as Lakin Engman cleared and passed to Palermo-Re, who fed Anna O'Hara for the goal.

Kristen Stark made it 2-0, and Palermo-Re assisted O'Hara again for a 3-0 lead in the sixth minute of play. O'Hara would finish with a hat trick for Bridgewater.

Devilbiss made a nice spin move past her marker, faked low, and scored up high for a 4-1 lead midway through the first half. Kayla O'Sullivan knocked down a Randolph pass later in the period and the Eagles broke in transition, resulting in an Annie Sullivan goal and a 6-1 BC advantage.

Stark passed to Devilbiss on an eight-meter chance for the opening goal of the second half, and then scored herself on a free position shot to make it 11-2.

Defensively, the Eagles got two caused turnovers each from Stark, Erica Blubaugh and O'Sullivan.

Bridgewater improves to 8-7, 3-4 ODAC and is currently a half-game ahead of Shenandoah for the final conference playoff spot, with the Hornets set to play their game in hand on Saturday against last-place Hollins.

The Eagles will play next at Shenandoah on Wednesday, March 27, with that game likely deciding the final ODAC postseason place.
