Women's Lacrosse Takes Crucial Conference Win Over Marlins

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. –
Bridgewater went 27:27 without allowing a goal as the Eagles took a crucial conference road win over Virginia Wesleyan, 13-10 on Wednesday.

Senior Jenna Devilbiss had six goals and an assist, with freshman Kristen Stark adding two goals and two assists.

Bridgewater improves to 7-6, 2-3 and moves into sixth place in the ODAC, while the Marlins fall to 2-10, 1-4.

Bridgewater led 10-8 at half and dominated early in the second period but couldn't get past VWC goalie Madison Carroll (16 saves), who made three stops including a tough low save on a Claire Palermo-Re eight meter shot.

The first goal of the second half finally came from Devilbiss with 18:47 on the clock. Devilbiss would add another less than a minute later, and senior Caroline Fletcher scored her 99th career goal to make it three in a span of 71 seconds.

The Marlins cut it to 13-10 late and were driving again in transition but BC goalie Rachel Gruber, who had 13 saves of her own, made a crucial interception to take back possession.

Bridgewater scored the final three goals of the first half to lead 10-8 heading into the break- two from Devilbiss off Palermo-Re passes and one from Sarah Yashinskie.

Bridgewater emerged with the first half lead despite nine saves in the period by Carroll. On the first possession of the game Carroll saved Devilbiss and then deflected away a pass to the left post, but the Eagles finally broke through with an Annie Sullivan shot off the post and in.

After Gruber saved a free position shot for Bridgewater, freshman Anna O'Hara went coast-to-coast and scored for a 2-1 lead. She nearly did the same later in the half with Bridgewater trailing 5-4, but was stopped by Carroll.

Stark made it 3-3 with an eight-meter goal, and then passed to an open Yashinskie on another free position chance to tie the contest at 8-all.

Palermo-Re then hit the post, but Yashinskie scored after a Marlin failed clear as BC closed the first half strong.

Bridgewater will host Roanoke on Saturday at 4 p.m. in another important conference matchup.
