Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater cut a five-goal deficit to two but struggled with clearing late, as the BC women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener 10-8 to Marymount on Saturday.
Claire Palermo-Re had a goal and a game-high three assists, while Caroline Fletcher and Anna O'Hara turned in two goals and an assist each.
O'Hara also had four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Katie Ellis added three caused turnovers for a Bridgewater defense that was strong for long stretches of the contest. Behind them, junior goalie Rachel Gruber had 13 saves.
Kelly Campbell gave Marymount a 10-5 lead with 19:54 remaining but the Eagles would not concede another goal as BC rallied.
After an Erica Blubaugh goal, Palermo-Re hit Devilbiss with a great pass as Devilbiss slipped past the goalkeeper and finished into an open net. Bridgewater then had a man-up opportunity and made it 10-8 with O'Hara finding Fletcher in front of the crease.
Good defending gave Bridgewater further chances to come all the way back, but the Eagles would suffer five consecutive failed clears and couldn't capitalize on the momentum.
After three straight failed clears, Campbell had a goal called off for an illegal stick. Again the Eagles turned it over trying to go the other way, and did so another time after Marymount was called offsides.
With the Eagles trailing early, Palermo-Re found O'Hara on a nice cut to the tie the game at 3-3. O'Hara caused a turnover at the other end, but Bridgewater gave it back on the clear and Campbell scored on a 2-on-0. Jessica Crew then completed an early hat trick to make it 5-3.
Natalie Tinkham forced two consecutive turnovers in the second half, assisting Campbell on the first one for a 9-5 lead and then immediately winning possession back for a Saints team that would soon make it 10-5.
Bridgewater falls to 2-1 and is departing tonight for Spring Break in Hilton Head, S.C. The Eagles will face Wentworth on Monday and Muhlenberg on Thursday, before returning to campus for a five-game homestand that will cover the rest of March.
Marymount, who got four goals from Campbell, three assists from Abby Wescott, and saw three different players force three turnovers (Bridgette Stacom, Tinkham, Wescott), improves to 2-2 on the year.
