MacLeish Scores Game-Winner in Impressive Road Win

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
Freshman Sean MacLeish scored the game-winner with 2:38 remaining as the Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team upset Virginia Wesleyan 12-11 on the road Saturday.

MacLeish scored man-up after BC goalie Andrew Buss (13 saves) had stopped John Roth up high and Chris Voorhees drew a pushing flag at the other end. Bridgewater then had to kill off a penalty for the final 15 seconds to close out the victory.

The Marlins finished in second place in the ODAC regular season standings last year, and came into today's matchup with a record of 6-2.

Bridgewater scored the game's final four goals after going down 11-8 early in the fourth quarter. Derrick Daniels forced a turnover on a Marlin clear and fed Voorhees to make it 11-10, and Voorhees then bounced a shot in from way outside to even things up at 11-11.

Sophomore Blake Mann recorded a hat trick in a stretch of 3:10 in the first quarter, as part of a 4-1 Eagles run to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the period.

He gave the Eagles their first lead of the game with 4:44 left in the first, and struck again less than a minute later with a Voorhees assist after Nick Strider won the ensuing faceoff. He finished off his hat trick with 1:34 on the clock.

MacLeish scored twice in the second quarter, putting BC back in front by a goal on both occasions. He made it 5-4 after Josh Currier had tied it on a man-up opportunity, and soon provided Bridgewater a 6-5 advantage.

With the contest tied early in the third, VWC took over possession and drew two flags on Bridgewater. Both were assessed to Curtis Hughes, sparing the Eagles' defense a 6-on-4 disadvantage, but Currier still converted on the two-minute power play for a 7-6 lead.

With Bridgewater trying to take back momentum, Buss made a save up high and the Marlins threw it away the next time down the field. BC turned it right back over on the clear to Currier however, who had plenty of time to put it away.

Tylden Mosby scored on a rip from outside after a VWC failed clear, keeping the Eagles within one at 8-7.

The Marlins stretched their lead to 10-7, but Mann kept it close by spinning around and shooting through a crowd in front of the crease after Thomas Maher had beaten his defender and fed Mann inside.

Bridgewater improves to 6-3, 1-1 ODAC and will kick off a four-game ODAC homestand next Saturday against Randolph-Macon.
