Box Score
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Guilford scored the game's final three goals on three eight-meter plays in a stretch of 1:29, as the Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team lost a tough 13-12 decision on Sunday.
Two free position goals- from Summer Fowler down low and Marina Bailey to the far post- just 22 seconds apart erased a two-goal Eagles lead in the second half. Fowler soon earned another eight meter chance and passed it to Carter MacLeod for the game-winner.
The Eagles had several chances late and Claire Palermo-Re hit the crossbar with 32 seconds remaining, but the Quakers were able to escape.
Guilford goalie Sammi Milbourn (seven saves) made a momentum-turning play early in the second half with Bridgewater threatening to go up by four.
Jenna Devilbiss opened the second half by assisting Sarah Yashinskie and then scoring herself for an 8-6 lead. After Palermo-Re assisted Annie Sullivan off the next draw control, the Eagles won yet another draw and Palermo-Re was in all alone but stopped by Milbourn. Guilford would respond with two quick goals to get back into the contest.
Bridgewater goalie Rachel Gruber had 15 stops at the other end and kept the game tied heading into halftime with an important double-save. She denied Taylor Campellone's outside attempt and then got across the goalmouth for a fantastic block on Holly Kozak after the Quaker picked up the rebound right in front of the open cage.
Bridgewater had won the opening draw and took the lead before Guilford had seen possession, with Devilbiss cutting right up the middle to score.
After Anna O'Hara made it 2-1 BC, Devilbiss drew a yellow card after winning the ensuing draw. Milbourn picked off a Kristen Stark pass before Devilbiss took possession back on the clear, but the Eagles were unable to convert.
Both teams picked up a yellow card soon after and Stark went the length of the field to score and make it 3-1. The Eagles were then down a player and Guilford converted at the other end.
Trailing 4-2, the Quakers ran off three straight to grab their first lead and force an Eagle timeout midway through the first half. Stark made a nice move and flipped a shot over the goalie to tie things back up.
Stark earned a hat trick with 4:17 left in the first, scoring in transition for the second time after Kayla O'Sullivan forced a turnover and Katie Ellis was fouled following a ground ball pickup.
Devilbiss totaled two goals, an assist and three draw controls, while O'Hara won seven draw controls and caused two turnovers. O'Sullivan totaled three CTs.
Fowler filled the box score for Guilford with three goals, three assists, six caused turnovers and two ground balls. Bailey had a hat trick, three ground balls and three draw controls.
