Second-Half Cold Spell Sinks Eagles

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Randolph College used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to take a 14-point lead and the WildCats led the rest of the way to defeat Bridgewater College, 68-57, Saturday afternoon in ODAC men's basketball action.

The loss snapped the Eagles' three-game winning streak. Bridgewater is now 6-13 overall and 5-6 in the ODAC. The WildCats improve to 11-10, 5-7 in the conference.

Both squads struggled to score early in the contest as the score was tied at 5-5 after more than seven minutes of play.

The Eagles moved ahead, 8-5, on a 3-pointer by Romello Crowell at the 12:17 mark and a jumper by Kevin Saylor with 11:03 left in the half put the Eagles on top 10-5.

Ryan Fields hit two free throws for the Cats before a 3-pointer by Logan Seacrist put the Eagles up by six, 13-7. Zach Desgain scored on a jumper for Randolph, but Efe Balfour hit two foul shots to keep the Bridgewater lead at six, 15-9, with 8:18 left in the half.

A layup by Desgain and a 3-pointer by Jason Eddie pulled the WildCats to within one before two foul shots by Seacrist gave BC a three-point lead, 17-14.

Fields and Bridgewater's Keonte Dennis traded buckets and then Fields made 1-of-2 at the line to trim the Eagles lead to two, 19-17.

Randolph tied the score on a driving layup by Seth Wimbish, but Saylor connected from long range, giving the Eagles a 22-19 lead with 3:31 left in the half.

Balfour hit two free throws before Wimbish and Bridgewater's Maalik Howard swapped buckets as the Eagles led 26-21 with two minutes remaining in the half.

The WildCats outscored Bridgewater 11-1 during the remainder of the half to take a five-point lead. Wimbish hit a 3-pointer to pull the WildCats to within two before Balfour made 1-of-2 at the line for a 27-24 Eagles lead.

Wimbish hit again from long range to tie the score and a layup by Fields gave Randolph a 29-27 lead with 42 seconds on the clock. After the Eagles turned the ball over, Desgain banked in a running 3-pointer just before the buzzer to send the WildCats to the locker room with a 32-27 lead.

Bridgewater came out strong in the second half and closed the gap to a single point. After Rhyle Scoot opened the half with a 10-footer for the visitors, Saylor hit from 3-point range to pull BC to within four, 34-30.

A jumper by Balfour made it a two-point game before Reid Jacoby hit two foul shots to put the Cats back up by four. Balfour then powered inside and converted a three-point play to cut the Randolph lead to one, 36-35, with 15:47 left in the game.

The Eagles then went cold from the field as they failed to score during the next 5:44 and Randolph took advantage of the cold spell with the decisive 13-0 run.

A 3-pointer by Jacoby pushed the margin to four and a layup by Fields made the score 41-35. Wimbish scored the next eight points on a layup and two 3-pointers to put the WildCats on top 49-35 with 10:19 left.

Seacrist snapped the drought with a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 11, but the Eagles could make no headway over the next seven minutes as the margin was still 11 points with 3:17 remaining.

A layup by Desgain pushed the margin to 13 points before a 3-pointer by Saylor cut the margin to 59-49 with 2:12 left to play.

The WildCats iced the game at the foul line where they hit 9-of-10 shots in the final two minutes to put the finishing touches on their 68-57 victory.

Seacrist paced three Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Balfour scored 16 points and Saylor added 11. Wimbish led the winners with 21 points and Desgain added 20.

Randolph made 22-of-46 shots for 47.8 percent while the Eagles connected on just 17-of-48 shots for 35.4 percent.

The WildCats held a slim 31-29 advantage on the boards. Andy Toe led the winners with five rebounds while Seacrist grabbed five boards for the Eagles.

Bridgewater faces a short turnaround as the Eagles return to action on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon to host Guilford College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
