Eagles Use Four-Goal Runs to Defeat Hood

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in each half as the Eagles left Hood College with an 11-9 victory on Tuesday.

Freshman defender Anna O'Hara led Bridgewater with four goals and added a team-high four ground balls and one caused turnover. Claire Palermo-Re had two goals and two assists, and Kayla O'Sullivan added a goal, two assists and three ground balls.

Meredith Morgan scored her first collegiate goal in the 11th minute, off a Palermo-Re assist, after Jade Locklear had scored to bring the Blazers back to within one at 3-2.

That sparked a run of four straight for the Eagles, as O'Hara, Annie Sullivan, and O'Sullivan all tallied over the next 11 minutes to make it 7-2 Bridgewater.

Hood rallied late in the first half, trailing just 7-4 at the break after the Eagles turned the ball over five times in the final five minutes of the period.

Bridgewater opened the second half with another four-goal spurt to go up 11-4. Two goals by Palermo-Re sandwiched a pair from O'Hara in the 34th and 35th minutes of play.

The Eagles were unable to score over the final 20:40 of the game as Hood struck five straight times to pull within two with 4:17 remaining. O'Sullivan won a crucial draw control, and Bridgewater was able to hold possession the rest of the way to kill off the clock.

The game was close despite a 35-15 shot advantage for Bridgewater, with Hood's returning All-Conference goalie Lauren Couch making 12 saves. The Blazers also scored four times on seven free position chances, while the Eagles were just 1-of-6 from the eight-meter arc.

The game had startly poorly for the Eagles when Hood's Locklear won the opening draw and Christina Christina Murphy cut through the defense to put BC down 1-0 after just 26 seconds. Bridgewater responded quickly however. O'Hara forced a turnover on the Hood clear and passed to fellow freshman Sarah Yashinski to tie the game up at 1-1. O'Hara would then score BC's second, and Yashinskie struck again for a 3-1 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Bridgewater kept forcing turnovers on early Blazer clear attempts. Jenna Devilbiss stripped a Hood player to set up Yashinskie's second goal, and Lakin Engman followed with a caused turnover after Hood won the next draw.

The Eagles improve to 2-0 and will be off until March 5, when BC plays its 2016 home opener against Marymount.
