BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team opened up 2016 with a win, comfortably defeating Ferrum 12-1 on the road Saturday.
Senior Caroline Fletcher led the way with four goals and an assist, while freshmen Sarah Yashinskie (two goals, assist) and Anna O'Hara (two goals) recorded their first collegiate scores.
Junior goalie Rachel Gruber saved 88.9% of shots faced, recording eight saves while allowing just one second half tally.
The Eagles led 8-0 at the break after a Yashinskie goal five seconds before halftime.
Yashinskie had also opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play. The Eagles struck soon after through Annie Sullivan to go ahead 2-0.
Fletcher had a hand in the next four Bridgewater goals, scoring three straight and then assisting O'Hara to make it 6-0.
Senior Jenna Devilbiss also scored in the first half, with junior Claire Palermo-Re adding two goals and an assist (to O'Hara) in the second period.
The Eagles hit the running clock on O'Hara's goal from Palermo-Re with 13:43 remaining. After Palermo-Re made it an 11-goal differential at 12-1, Fletcher won the ensuing draw control and the Eagles held possession for the next four minutes.
Devilbiss led all players with four draw controls. Fletcher controlled three draws and also caused a turnover for Bridgewater.
Audrey Ramsey had three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers for Ferrum. The Panthers' lone goal came from Julianne Bove.
Bridgewater (1-0) will travel to Hood College on Tuesday afternoon.
