ODAC Tournament Pairings
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College tuned up for the ODAC tournament with a little extra work Saturday afternoon as the Eagles needed double overtime to defeat Roanoke College, 90-83, in the final game of the regular season.
The victory earned the Eagles the No. 6 seed for the upcoming conference tournament which begins Monday evening with first-round action. Bridgewater (13-11, 9-7 in the ODAC) will host Randolph College in a 7:00 p.m. first-round contest. The teams played once during the regular season with the Eagles taking an 85-69 victory on the WildCats' homecourt.
Saturday's game with the Maroons was closely contested throughout. The biggest lead of the first three quarters belonged to the Eagles when Jessica Lam scored on a layup with 46 seconds left in third period to give the hosts a seven-point, 58-51, advantage.
Bridgewater threatened to pull away early in the final period as the Eagles pushed the margin to double digits.
Bridgewater's Briana Moore and Roanoke's Ellen Wagner traded points before a layup by Cassidy Burkholder and a three-point play by Lam put the Eagles on top 65-53 with eight minutes left in the game.
The Maroons refused to go away and a 12-2 run over the next four minutes trimmed the margin to two points, 67-65. During the stretch the Eagles made just 1-of-3 shots and turned the ball over four times.
Bridgewater managed to stay ahead until Roanoke's Cary Beahm made 1-of-2 foul shots to knot the score at 72-72 with 34 seconds left.
The Maroons fouled Bridgewater's Oshene Kelly and the Eagles senior made the second of two free throws for a one-point, 73-72, lead with 30 seconds remaining.
Roanoke's Bridget Holleran missed a chance to give the Maroons the lead when her jumper was off target. Burkholder controlled the rebound and was fouled with 15 seconds left. Burkholder made the first free throw, but missed the second and Wagner controlled the rebound for Roanoke.
Jamella Foster took a pass from Holleran and drilled a clutch jumper with five ticks remaining to tie the score at 74-74. Jessi Strom's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark as the teams headed for the first overtime session.
The Eagles got to the foul line early in the extra session and made 5-of-6 free throws to open up a 79-74 lead with 2:27 remaining on the clock.
Roanoke scored its first points in overtime at the 1:36 mark when a layup by Foster trimmed the Bridgewater lead to three, 79-76.
The Eagles then turned the ball over and a driving layup by Holleran made it a one-point game with 47 seconds left.
With the shot clock winding down, Moore missed a jumper for the Eagles and Jasmine Agee pulled down the rebound to give Roanoke the ball with 19 seconds left.
Wagner hit a jumper with 11 seconds left to give the Maroons a one-point lead. With the game clock ticking toward zero, Roanoke fouled Burkholder. The Bridgewater senior missed the first foul shot, but made the second to send the game to a second overtime with the score tied at 80-80.
Lam put the Eagles ahead with the first bucket of the second overtime, but Wagner answered with a layup for Roanoke to tie the score at 82-82.
The score remained tied at 82 for more than two minutes. Then, Moore hit a pair of foul shots for an 84-82 Eagles lead with 1:37 left.
The Maroons missed two shots at the offensive end with Burkholder controlling the rebound after the second miss. Moore then dished off to Jessalyn Monday for a layup, giving Bridgewater a four-point, 86-82 lead with 1:10 remaining.
Foster hit 1-of-2 foul shots for the Maroons, but Sydni Carey responded with a 2-for-2 effort at the line to push the Eagles lead to 88-83 with 19 seconds remaining. Roanoke's Kelsey Smith missed on a 3-point attempt and the ball went out of bounds with possession going to the Eagles. Roanoke fouled Moore and the BC freshman hit both free throws to put the finishing touches on the 90-83 double overtime victory.
Burkholder scored 24 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to lead the Eagles' effort. Lam scored 19 points for the Eagles, followed by Moore and Strom, each with 12 points.
Roanoke's Beahm led all scorers with 25 points. Holleran just missed a rare triple-double as she finished with 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Wagner also reached double figures with 16 points.
Bridgewater won the battle on the boards by a 52-45 margin. In addition to Burkholder's nine rebounds, Kelly and Kaitlyn Lehan each grabbed eight boards. Lehan gave the Eagles a strong effort off the bench as she also scored seven points and blocked four shots in 15 minutes of play. Agee came off the Roanoke bench to lead the Maroons with 10 rebounds.
