Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Roanoke College survived a frantic finish late Saturday afternoon to take a 3-2 victory over Bridgewater Collge in ODAC men's soccer action.
The teams combined for four goals in the final eight minutes with the Maroons holding on in the final two minutes for the victory.
The first half was controlled by the defenses as both squads struggled to generate opportunities in the offensive end. The Maroons held a slim 6-4 edge in shots in the opening half.
The second half followed the same script until the Maroons finally got of the board in the 68th minute.
The Eagles were whistled for a foul just outside the box, giving the Maroons a free kick. Tim Mahabir line up the free kick from 20 yards out and blasted the shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 Roanoke lead.
Bridgewater scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute off a set piece. Leo Alcantara took the corner for the Eagles and lofted a pass that floated near the back of the box. Jacob Heiston headed the ball toward goal and Aaron McElhenny headed a shot past Roanoke keeper NickTadros to tie the score at 1-1.
Roanoke answered quickly, scoring with exactly six minutes left on the game clock. Another foul on the Eagles set up a free kick from the left side. Mahabir again took the free kick and this time sent the ball toward the near post. Maroons defender Marc Hoppler snuck inside the defense and tucked his shot inside the post, making the score 2-1.
The Maroons added another goal less than a minute later on a misplay by the Eagles back line. Roanoke sent a through ball toward the top of the box with the Maroons' Jon-Cody Mactutus and Bridgewater's Matt Pagano racing for the ball. Eagles' keeper Mark Davis came off his line out toward the top of the box and Pagano touched the ball toward the goal and it rolled in for an own goal, giving the Maroons what appeared to be a comfortable 3-1 lead.
Bridgewater, however, wasn't quite finished.
Alcantara fired a shot on goal from 25 yards out, but Tadros made a diving save to deny the Eagles.
Roanoke sent the ball into the Eagles defensive end, but Jose Rodriguez possessed the ball and sent a long pass from beyond midfield twoard the top of the box at the Eagles' offenisve end. Tadros came off his line near the top of the box, but his attempt to clear the ball bounced off Eagles forward Max Chacon and went directly to Thomas White. White kicked the ball into the open goal to pull the Eagles to within 3-2 with 1:46 left on the clock.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure in the final minute, but were unable to get off a potential tying shot as the Maroons survived for the one-goal victory.
Roanoke held narrow advantages in shots attempted, 10-7, and corner kicks at 5-3. Davis recorded five saves for the Eagles and Tadros had one save in goal for the Maroons.
Birdgewater, now 8-6-2 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC, returns to action Wednesday when the Eagles make the trip to Hampden-Sydney to play the Tigers in a key ODAC encounter. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
