BRIDGEWATER, Va.- Bridgewater College was forced to overtime for the second straight game and this time the Eagles came out on top with a 78-75 victory Saturday afternoon over Emory & Henry in ODAC action played at Nininger Hall.
The Eagles evened their overall record at 6-6 and their ODAC mark at 2-2. The Wasps fell to 9-3 overall and the loss was their first in conference play after three victories to start the ODAC slate.
Emory & Henry had possession for the last shot in regulation with a chance to win. Wasps point guard Megan Jacoby drove the lane but her pass was knocked out of bounds with just two seconds left. The visitors were forced to settle for Chloe Harris' desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer, but the shot was off the mark.
E&H scored the first three points of overtime, but the Eagles evened the tally on a 3-pointer by Jessi Strom.
The Wasps regained the lead on a free throw by Asja Jenkins before a layup by Oshene Kelly and another 3-ball by Strom put the Eagles ahead 73-69 with 2:05 left in OT.
After a free throw by Kelly pushed the margin to five, Tessa Johnston scored from inside to make it a one-possession game, 74-71 with 1:21 remaining.
Bridgewater's Cassidy Burkholder and E&H forward Blevins traded buckets, keeping the Bridgewater lead at three, 76-73, with 52 seconds to play.
Bridgewater had three shot attempts on its next possession, but came away empty handed as E&H controlled the rebound with 17 seconds left.
Johnston pulled the Wasps to within a single point with a layup with just six ticks left on the clock. The Eagles then got the ball into the hands of Briana Moore and the freshman calmly sank both free throws for a 78-75 Bridgewater lead.
E&H had one last chance, but Johnston's contested 3-pointer was off target and Kelly grabbed the rebound at the buzzer to preserve the Eagles' three-point victory.
Bridgewater used a 12-2 run bridging the end of the first period and the start of the second to open up an early double-digit lead over the Wasps.
Moore put the Eagles ahead with a 15-footer and Burkholder snaked her way between two defenders to score on a driving layup, giving the Eagles a 10-6 lead midway through the first period. Harris then scored for the visitors, but Lam answered with a baseline jumper and Jessalyn Monday added a pair of free throws, giving Bridgewater a 14-8 lead at the end of the opening period.
After the teams traded empty possessions to open the second period, Moore scored from inside, making the score 16-8. The Wasps missed a shot on their next trip to the offensive end and Burkholder followed with a driving layup to put the Eagles on top 18-8 with 8:03 remaining in the second period.
The lead was still 10 when Kaitlyn Lehan took a pass from Sydni Carey and scored inside, but the Wasps countered with a 5-0 spurt to cut the margin in half, 26-21.
E&H closed to within four when Jacoby drained a long 3-pointer with 41 seconds left in the second period, but Kelly scored on a stickback just before the buzzer to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 31-25 halftime lead.
Buckets by Lam and Burkholder to open the third period pushed the BC advantage back to double digits, 35-25, but E&H then put together a 12-4 run to pull within a bucket. After a layup by Moore made the score 39-32, Jacoby converted a three-point play and Karina Farr added a jumper as the Wasps closed to within two, 39-37, with 2:55 left in the third.
Lehan and Farr traded hoops before a layup by Anna Green pulled E&H even at 41-41. Monday and Farr then traded bucket before a 3-pointer by Strom with five seconds left on the clock propelled the Eagles to a 46-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Another 3-pointer by Strom gave the Eagles a 58-52 edge with 7:18 left in the game, but the Wasps then hit the Eagles with an 8-0 run to grab the lead. Four points by Tamara Brewster and a jumper by Jenkins tied the score with 5:42 remaining. Brewster then worked the paint for a layup, giving the Wasps a 60-58 lead at the 4:36 mark.
A 15-footer by Carey and a three-point play from Moore gave the Eagles a three-point lead, but Jacoby hit a long 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key to tie things up at 63-63 with 2:18 left to play.
The score remained tied until Farr scored on a baseline drive, giving the Wasps a 65-63 lead with 36 seconds left. The Eagles knotted the score when Strom found Kelly open for an easy layup with just 26 seconds left on the clock.
That set the stage for Emory & Henry's final possession and when Harris' 3-pointer missed, the teams headed for overtime.
All five Bridgewater starters scored in double figures with Burkholder leading the way with 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Moore scored 13 points, followed by Strom with 12, Kelly with 11 and Lam with 10. Kelly finished with a double-double as she also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Brewster came off the bench to lead the Wasps with 18 points. Jacoby scored 16 points and Farr added 11. Blevins led E&H on the boards with a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening when they make the long trip to Virginia Wesleyan College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
