Hornets Pull Away From Eagles In Closing Minutes

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg College outscored Bridgewater 16-7 over the final four minutes Saturday to pull away for a 71-58 victory over the Eagles in ODAC action.

Lynchburg (11-4, 4-2 in the ODAC) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead and held the upper hand for the first 15 minutes of play in the first half.

Then, Bridgewater freshman DJ Caldwell came off the bench and shot the Eagles into the lead.

The Hornets led 22-18 on a bucket by AJ Hamilton before Caldwell  knocked down a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles to within a point.

After Lynchburg's Austen Arnold missed from long range, Caldwell cashed in again from behind the arc to give the Eagles their first lead, 24-22, at the 2:47 mark of the first half.

Hamilton scored to tie the score before Caldwell hit a 15-footer along the left baseline to put the Eagles up 26-24. Two foul shots by Lynchburg's Lyndon White tied the game at 26-26, but Caldwell knocked down another long range shot, this one from well beyond the arc, to give the Eagles a 29-26 lead with 1:42 left in the half.

A layup by Jesse Case pushed the Eagles margin to five, 31-26, with 19 seconds left, but Zack Burnett hit two foul shots with eight seconds remaining as the half ended with the Eagles holding a 31-28 advantage.

Lynchburg moved ahead with the first four points of the second half before Cameron Thurston hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to tie the score at 34-34.

Hornets big man Alex Graves and Bridgewater's Keonte Davis traded points before a 3-pointer by Case put the Eagles back on top 39-36.

Hamilton answered with a 3-pointer for the Hornets and Graves worked the paint and converted a three-point play, making the score 41-39 in favor of the home team. The points were the beginning of a 13-1 Lynchburg run as the Hornets threatened to put some distance on the Eagles with a 49-40 lead with 9:38 left in the game.

Following an Eagles timeout, Bridgewater responded with a quick 7-0 spurt to pull within a bucket. Thurston tallied from beyond the arc and then added a driving layup, trimming the deficit to 49-45. Case added a short jumper to make it 49-47 with 8:18 remaining.

Graves and Burnett added buckets for the Hornets before two free throws by Efe Balfour trimmed the Lynchburg lead to 53-49 with 5:13 on the clock.

Graves scored on a 15-footer, but Balfour added two more free throws to keep the margin at four, 55-51 , with 4:26 left.

After a Hornets turnover, the Eagles had a chance to pull closer, but Thurston missed the front end of a one-and-one. Lynchburg then ran off the next 10 points on the way to the final 71-58 margin of victory.

Caldwell led the Eagles with 13 points, followed by Case with 12 and Thurston with 11. Graves paced the winners with a game-high 19 points. Burnett scored 18 and Hamilton added 13.

The Eagles held their own on the boards, losing the rebounding battle by just two, 38-36. Balfour led Bridgewater with eight boards, matching Graves' team-best total for the Hornets.

Bridgewater (3-11, 2-4 in the ODAC) returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles make the long trek to Virginia Wesleyan College.
