Hornets Rally In Final Two Innings To Eliminate Eagles

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Shenandoah tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and then pushed across the winning run in the ninth to take a 4-3 victory over Bridgewater College on the second day of the ODAC baseball tournament. The loss eliminated the Eagles from tournament play while the Hornets remained unbeaten after two games.

The game featured a battle of junior lefties on the mound and both dominated. Shenandoah's Michael Scimanico and Bridgewater's Ryan Leake traded zeroes for six innings- each allowing just two hits.

The Hornets finally broke through against Leake in the seventh to lead 1-0. With one out, Ricky Pardo beat out a chopper to short for an infield hit. Pardo moved to second on Joe Coleman's bunt and scored when Billy Arens' pop fly to shallow right dropped just inside fair territory for a run-scoring single.

The Eagles took advantage of a couple of mistakes by the Hornets in the field to take the lead with three runs in the eighth.

Cavin Clyde led off the inning with a single and Hunter Hensley reached safely on a bunt single. Hensley, trying to put down a sacrifice bunt, popped the bunt up out in front of the plate. Catcher Danny Freshley was unable to catch the ball  in the air and when it hit the ground the ball spun away from Freshley, allowing Hensley to reach on the base hit.

Derrik Walling then came to the plate and squared around to sacrifice bunt. The pitch from Scimanico, however, sailed behind Walling's head and both runners advanced. Walling then hit a fly ball to shallow center and Hornets' shortstop Wilt made an over-the-shoulder catch just on the outfield grass. Clyde tagged at third and beat Wilt's throw to the plate, tying the score at 1-1.

With Hensley at second, Austin Batten struck out swinging at a pitch in the dirt. Batten reached saafely and advanced all the way to third when Freshley's throw to first sailed into the Bridgewater bullpen. Hensley scored on the error, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Batten then scored on Darren Yoder's sacrifice fly to deep left, making the score 3-1.

The Hornets answered in the bottom of the eighth against Eagles reliever justin Petock. Freshley led off the  inning with a single and J.J. McDaniel followed with a base hit to center. Both runners advanced on Ryan Mossman's sac bunt and both scored on Nolan Overby's opposite-field triple into the rightfield corner, making the score 3-3. Petock stranded the go-ahead run at third as he retired the next two batters on infield pop-ups to end the threat.

The Hornets pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to remain unbeaten in the tournament. Arens led off with a single and moved to second on Wilt's sac bunt. With first base open, the Eagles intentionally walked Michael Paul, putting runners at first and second. John Woodard took over on the mound for the Eagles and Arens swiped third base to give the Horents runners at the corners. Freshley walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases with one out, bringing McDaniel to the plate. The Hornets third baseman lined a 1-2 pitch into left-center field, plating Arens with the winning run.

Leake pitched seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out six and walked four. Sophomore outfielder Kenner Berry led the Eagles at the plate, collecting two of the team's four hits.

Bridgewater will be back in action on Saturday, May 2 when the Eagles host Marymount for a doubleheader on Senior and Family Day at the ballpark. The first game begins at noon.
