Brown's Overtime Goal Leads BC to Win at Guilford

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team finally broke through with a close win, but the Eagles left themselves with work to do following an 8-7 overtime victory at Guilford.

Bridgewater has played every opponent but one this season to within three goals, but had an 0-7 record in games decided by three goals or less before holding out for today's win.

After a Shenandoah overtime win at Virginia Wesleyan narrowly kept Bridgewater alive in the ODAC playoff race (BC would have been eliminated with a VWC victory), the Eagles could have all but locked up the sixth and final spot on tiebreakers by beating Guilford by four goals or more.

It was not to be, as the Eagles led by just one in the final minute, after Brittany Lanahan put them ahead with 3:45 remaining. Guilford's equalizing goal with 35 seconds sent the game to overtime, but did give BC one final six minute period to reach that scoring margin.

Brittany Brown scored what would be the game winner, midway through the first overtime period after Caroline Augsburger had forced a turnover. Rachel Gruber came up with two big saves to protect the lead, although the Eagles could not record another shot on goal before the end of the extra period.

The BC defense held Guilford scoreless for over 34 minutes, erasing an early 5-2 deficit.

Caroline Fletcher cut the deficit to two heading into halftime, and Jenna Devilbiss struck twice in a 46-second span early in the second period to bring Bridgewater level.

Fletcher gave the Eagles the lead with 8:25 remaining off an assist from Claire Palermo-Re, but Guilford tied it soon after. The Quakers then came from behind again in the final minute to force overtime.

Bridgewater had led 2-1 early after tallies from Colligan and Brown, but was then held scoreless for just under 20 minutes as the hosts recorded four straight.

Brown scored twice as she stepped into a bigger role with BC missing two starting attackers. Fletcher and Devilbiss each added two goals and an assist.

Gruber had another big game in the cage, making 12 saves while allowing just seven goals in 66 minutes of action. Augsburger caused four turnovers and Colligan picked up four ground balls.

Guilford got a hat trick from Demming Carlow and 12 saves from goalie Sammi Milbourn.

Bridgewater's season now comes down to Wednesday's road game at #11 Washington & Lee, with the Eagles (7-8, 4-5) needing to beat the nationally-ranked Generals to qualify for the ODAC playoffs.
