Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College wiped out an early 3-0 deficit Monday afternoon to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan, 7-6, in non-conference baseball action.
N.C. Wesleyan (10-25) got to Eagles' starter Ian Mayes for three runs in the second. James Kornegay singled home a run and a single by Kani Upshur plated two runs for a 3-0 Bishops lead.
The Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the second when Cavin Clyde tripled and scored on an infield single by Chris King to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Bridgewater (21-9-1) took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, the Eagles put together five consecutive hits. Bay Liskey singled and Clyde followed with a single to put runners at first and second. King then singled to the opposite field, scoring Liskey to make the score 3-2. With runners at the corners, a single by Josh Lasam plated Clyde, tying the score at 3-3. A single by Dylan Horne gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead and a two-run double by Darren Yoder pushed the margin to 6-3.
The Bishops made it 6-4 with a run in the fifth, but the Eagles pushed the lead back to three with a run in the seventh. Yoder singled to lead off the inning and scored all the way from first when Liskey's base hit to center skipped away from the outfielder.
N.C. Wesleyan loaded the sacks on a walk, a hit batsman and an infield single to open the eighth against Eagles' reliever Kyle Jones. John Woodard entered on the mound for Bridgewater and gave up a bloop single to right to Caleb Narron as the Bishops closed to within 7-5. Another run scored on a sacrifice fly to center by James Lovett, making it a one-run game, 7-6. Woodard left the bases full as he retired Ciro Norzagaray on a fly ball to right field.
Woodard notched the save as he retired the Bishops in order in the ninth to close out the 7-6 victory.
Mayes picked up the victory with seven solid innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out three and walking two.
Yoder, Liskey, Clyde, King and Horne each had two hits as they combined for 10 of the Eagles 11 hits. Yoder and King drove in two runs each.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they host Shenandoah. Action begins at 3:00 p.m. with the completion of last week's halted game. Action picks up in the top of the ninth with the Hornets holding a 3-2 lead and the Eagles at bat with one out and runners at first and second. Following the completion of the halted game, the regularly-scheduled contest will be played.
