Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team was tied at halftime but couldn't get an attack going in the second period, losing 10-7 to visiting Lynchburg on Saturday night.
The Eagles took a quick 3-0 lead and were tied 6-6 at the break, before scoring just once in the second half.
Rachel Gruber made 11 saves in goal for Bridgewater, while junior Caroline Fletcher caused three turnovers, won three draw controls and picked up three ground balls. Jenna Devilbiss led the attack with two goals.
Katherine Francis broke the 6-6 deadlock early in the second half, and neither side scored for the next 14+ minutes. Gruber made a great save on Helen Boniface; soon after, Devilbiss flipped a shot just wide and then was saved down low on the same possession.
Lynchburg struck twice in 25 seconds with 13 minutes to go, then added a third in a span of under two minutes to open up a daunting 10-6 advantage.
Bridgewater didn't go away, breaking a scoreless drought of almost 20 minutes with Fletcher's free position shot. Paige Hennessy had a great chance rebound off the left post with 5:41 remaining, and was then saved on a free position shot by Lynchburg goalie Hailey Bossert.
Devilbiss made a pair of great cuts early in the game, on the opening goal and then again to make it 3-0 in the fourth minute of action. Lynchburg quickly called timeout.
Gruber made a good save on Alexa Carey early; Caroline Augsburger cleared, Hennessy was fouled and the senior scored on the free position for a quick 2-0 lead.
Lynchburg got back in the game with two goals in 24 seconds- from Caroline Carozza and Carey.
The Eagles responded with a good odd-man rush, with Fletcher feeding a wide-open Claire Palermo-Re for a 4-2 lead with 13:05 left in the first half.
Lynchburg won 9-of-13 draw controls in the first half, including seven straight after the opening draw to help the Hornets get back in the game. The seventh straight draw win for LC led to the first tie game of the contest at 4-4.
Trailing 6-4, Bridgewater tied it going into halftime with two goals in the final minute. Meredith Wimbrow finished off a rebound after Bossert stoned Jesse Colligan from point-blank range, and Colligan added an eight-meter six seconds before the horn.
Bossert made nine saves for Lynchburg, while Carozza had six points on two goals and four assists. Francis had a game-high four goals.
The Eagles out-shot Lynchburg 25-23, had three less unsuccessful clears, and were good on 3-of-6 free position shots, but ultimately the Hornets were more efficient in open-play attack.
Bridgewater falls to 5-4, 2-1 ODAC and faces another tough ODAC game on Monday night at Roanoke. Lynchburg improves to 5-4, 3-2.
Due to scheduling conflicts with the team's final home game, the Eagles held Senior Day tonight and recognized three departing starters- former All-ODAC selections Hennessy and Augsburger, and two-time captain Brittany Lanahan.
