BRIDGEWATER, Va. - After taking a 2-1 lead in doubles, Virginia Wesleyan split the six singles matches to edge Bridgewater College 5-4 Wednesday in ODAC men's tennis action.
The Eagles and Marlins split the top two doubles matches by identical 8-6 scores. Wesleyan's Graham Wilson and Kenny Downing edged Christian Lynn and Kyle Hartfield at No. 1 while BC's Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff slipped past Adam Rosenblaum and Tyler Chang at No. 2
Virginia Wesleyan took their second doubles point when Spenser Bullock and Drew Tomajczyk defeated Aaron Snook and Cameron Rhoney 8-1.
The pivotal singles match took place at the top of ladder as Bridgewater's Larsen squared off with the Marlins' Wilson in a match that went three sets. Larsen won the opening set 6-3, but Wilson rallied to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-1.
The Eagles controlled play at the next three flights. Hartfield defeated Downing 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Lynn downed Bullock at No. 3 singles, winning 6-4, 6-2. Rishcoff had a close match at No. 4 where he stopped Tomajczyk 6-4, 6-3.
The Marlins gained the split they needed by posting victories at No. 5 and No. 6. Rosenblaum defeated Snook 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 while Brendan Kelleher stopped Rhoney 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
