Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team shut out Randolph in the first half, ultimately taking a 12-2 victory on Tuesday night in Lynchburg, Va.
Junior Caroline Fletcher had a hat trick while Claire Palermo-Re added two goals and two assists. Jesse Colligan, Jenna Devilbiss and Meredith Wimbrow tallied two goals each.
Defensively, Caroline Augsburger caused five turnovers and picked up six ground balls. Devilbiss, Wimbrow and Brittany Lanahan each forced two turnovers while picking up three or more ground balls as well.
Sophomore goalie Rachel Gruber kept a first half shutout despite five shots on goal in the period. She finished with five saves.
Gruber saved Randolph's Erin Campbell on the first shot of the contest. A yellow card on Colleen Cunningham then gave the Wildcats a man-advantage but Gruber responded with another stop on Campbell.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the fifth minute when an Augsburger caused turnover led to Palermo-Re feeding Fletcher for the goal.
With Bridgewater up 5-0, Gruber saved Taylor Klevenz after the Wildcat had won the preceding draw control. Late in the half, she stopped both Campbell and Klevenz with the score at 9-0.
Annie Sullivan gave Bridgewater a 2-0 lead, with Wimbrow and Palermo-Re following with unassisted strikes.
Palermo-Re fed Wimbrow to make it 5-0 Eagles with 13:44 remaining in the first half.
Fletcher pushed the score to 6-0, with Colligan winning the ensuing draw control and going right down for another tally just 12 seconds later.
With 7:41 remaining in the first half, Palermo-Re made it 9-0 for the visiting Eagles. Bridgewater's attack would score just three more times for the final 37:41 of the contest, although BC was stalling for a good portion of that.
For her part, Randolph goalkeeper Samantha Fagone had 15 saves, including 11 in the first half.
While the Eagles caused 17 turnovers (Randolph had 23 overall), the Eagles did turn the ball over 17 times themselves. Those came mostly in the attacking zone, with BC being successful on all 14 clearing attempts.
Bridgewater improves to 5-3, 2-0 ODAC and will host Lynchburg College on Saturday night, in an important game for both sides in the conference playoff race.
While it will not be the final home game of the season, the Eagles will also use Saturday to celebrate their Senior Day and recognize departing starters Augsburger, Lanahan and Paige Hennessy.
