ROANOKE, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team evened its overall record at 4-4 and improved to 3-1 in ODAC play with a 7-2 victory Tuesday at Hollins University.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles action and then won the top four singles flights to close out the victory.
Bridgewater's Maria Hawkins and Marla O'Bryan took an 8-2 victory over Victoria Coffee and Tiffany Hodges at No. 1 doubles while Eagles teammates Shannon Quinn and Ashley Price rolled to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 over Madeline Perry and Htet Myat San.
In the closest doubles match, Bridgewater's Whitney Cash and Haley Lloyd held off Jhovanna Salmeron and Amelia Verkerk at No. 3 doubles for an 8-5 victory.
Bridgewater won the first four singles flights, all in straight sets.
At No. 1, Hawkins defeated Coffee 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 2 O'Bryan rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hodges. Quinn downed Perry 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Price turned back Salmeron 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
Hollins picked up its two points in the final two singles flights.
Verkerk won at No. 5, outlasting Cash in split sets. Cash won the first set 6-4, but Verkerk evened things with a 6-2 win in the second set. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Verkerk edging Cash 10-8.
Htet Myat San won at No. 6 singles for Hollins as she defeated Lloyd 6-3, 6-3.
