Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan picked up a key doubleheader sweep over the Bridgewater College Eagles in ODAC baseball action Sunday afternoon.
The Marlins controlled the opener 7-1 and rallied late to take the second game 5-3.
In the opener, the Marlins' Alex Tucci outdueled Ryan Leake in a battle of lefties. Tucci pitched 7.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just seven hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Leake allowed just two earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
The Marlins would score all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Erby led off with a single and stole second. He moved to third on a ground ball and scored on Taylor Erby's single for a 1-0 Virginia Wesleyan lead. Taylor Erby scored on an error, making the score 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth when the Marlins added another run on a single by Trey Hanchey.
Virginia Wesleyan put the game away with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to lead 7-0.
Bridgewater scored its lone run in the ninth. Dustin Garst singled and moved to second on an error. Garst scored on a single by Justin Petock.
The Marlins struck first in the second game with a run in the second when C.J. Lindsay doubled and scored on a single by Nik Silvo.
Bridgewater grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Darren Yoder singled to lead off the inning and Andrew Saunders was safe on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Hensley. Yoder scored on Cavin Clyde's groundout and Saunders raced home on a single by Derrik Walling, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The hosts responded in the bottom half of the inning and tied the score on a RBI-double by Taylor Erby.
Bridgewater regained the lead in the top of the eighth when four consecutive walks forced home the go-ahead run.
Virginia Wesleyan answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead and the Marlins' Asutin Gammon set the Eagles down in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the 5-3 victory.
Bridgewater, now 12-3 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC, returns to action Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles travel to Harrisonburg to meet rival Eastern Mennonite.
