Eagles Control Second Half To Defeat Roanoke, 61-51

SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College outscored Roanoke College 34-23 in the second half to wipe out a one-point halftime deficit and claim a 61-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Saturday afternoon.

Cassidy Burkholder and Jessica Lam each scored 17 points to lead the Eagles to the win. Cary Beahm and Ellen Wagner paced the Maroons with 10 points each.

Bridgewater is now 11-9 overall and 6-6 in the ODAC while the Maroons drop to 7-14 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Bridgewater took the lead with an 8-0 spurt early in the second half. After Roanoke's Anna Carter hit two foul shots to put the Maroons up by three, Lam and Oshene Kelly scored on inside buckets to give the Eagles a 31-30 lead.

Heather Cantrell and Kaitlyn Lehan added inside baskets to put the Eagles on top 35-30 with 14:22 left in the contest.

Roanoke scored its first field goal of the second half on a jumper by McKee Tatum at the 13:42 mark and teammate Ellen Wagner added a jumper to pull the Maroons to within a point, 35-34.

Lam then connected on a jumper and Jessi Strom knocked down a 3-pointer to push the Eagles' lead to six, 40-34.

Roanoke chipped away at the margin and a layup by Wagner made it a two-point game 42-40, with 9:10 left.

Strom and Lam answered with back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Eagles a 48-40 lead with 6:25 on the clock.

After a layup by Carter pulled the Maroons to within six points, the Eagles put the game away with a 7-0 run. Burkholder converted a three-point play and Kelly added a layup to push the Eagles lead to double figures. Burkholder capped the spurt with a short jumper, giving Bridgewater a 55-42 lead with just three minutes left.

Roanoke held a 43-37 edge on the boards with Beahm grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Cantrell pulled down nine boards for the Eagles and Lehan added seven.

Bridgewater shot 45.5 percent from the floor, making 25-of-55 shots. The Maroons made just 19-of-68 shots for 27.8 percent.

The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening with the long road trip to Virginia Wesleyan College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
