Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater women's lacrosse team got back on track Saturday at the Jopson Athletic Conference, beating Southern Virginia in the Eagles' 2015 home opener.
BC recovered from a tough 19-2 loss in their opener to win by the same scoreline three days later and get back to .500 on the young season.
Sophomore Claire Palermo-Re had a game-high seven assists and nine points on the day. Classmate Jesse Colligan had five goals, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The Eagles forced 26 turnovers overall, as the Knights were only successful on 25% of their clears against the BC defense (7-of-28). Eight different Eagles caused multiple turnovers, including three each from Brittany Lanahan, Palermo-Re and Caroline Fletcher.
Fletcher also had two goals and two assists, while freshman Brittney Brown added four points on a hat trick and one assist. Meredith Wimbrow scored a hat trick and junior Jenna Devilbiss had two goals and an assist.
The Eagles raced out to a 9-0 lead in under 16 minutes of play. A nice save by BC goalie Rachel Gruber soon led to a Wimbrow goal and a 3-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Freshman Kayla O'Sullivan stripped Megan Barfuss, leading to a Paige Hennessy counterattack that was saved. Eventually, Colligan scored on the possession for a 6-0 scoreline.
A nice drive by Colligan made it 8-0 with exactly 15 minutes left in the opening half, and Fletcher added a ninth 41 seconds later.
The Eagles got to nine goals in a flash, but it took a while to get the running clock. The Eagles had a 10th goal waived off for a crease violation, and then SVU's Rainey Whitworth went coast-to-coast for the visitors' first goal of the day.
Hennessy made it 10-1 with 5:30 left in the half, but SVU goalie Cammi Miller got back up to deny Palermo-Re after falling down getting across her crease.
Brown finally scored twice in a row late in the first half to push the gap in double-digits for good.
Gruber made a great point-blank stop after Zoe Bradshaw had beaten her defender. Miller responded with a tough leg save to deny Devilbiss at the other end.
With 10:30 left in the contest, Hennessy was saved by Miller but the senior chased Ericha Golder down the field to win possession back. Fletcher soon scored for a 16-2 lead.
Wimbrow tallied on the man-advantage for an 18-2 scoreline, and Colligan capped the day with the Eagles' 19th goal late in the contest.
Miller saved 9 of 15 shots on goal in the second goal, and finished with 15 stops overall.
The Eagles are 1-1 and will be home again on Wednesday against Frostburg State before heading to Hilton Head for spring break in a week's time.
Bridgewater earned a fought-victory last season against FSU, defeating the Bobcats 12-9. Caroline Augsburger caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls in that game, while Gruber made seven saves.
