Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Three Bridgewater pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout Saturday afternoon to lead the Eagles to a season-opening 2-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan.
The Eagles made the long trip to Newport News, Va., early Saturday morning for its scheduled date with N.C. Wesleyan. As the temperature climbed, Christopher Newport's field started to thaw and became unplayable. The Eagles and N.C. Wesleyan decided to load the buses and make the trip to Rocly Mount and played the game on the Bishops' home field.
Bridgewater scored both runs in the top of the third and that proved to be enough for the pitching staff as Ryan Leake, Steven Woerner and Justin Petock combined to silence the Bishops' bats.
With two outs and nobody on in the third, Cavin Clyde kept the inning going with a single. Clyde moved to second on a balk and scored on Derrik Walling's single, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The throw home on Walling's RBI-single allowed Walling to move to second and he scored on Hunter Hensley's single for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
Bridgewater starter Leake was dominant in his four-inning stint and picked up the win. The junior lefty allowed just one base hit in his outing. He struck out seven and walked two. Woerner held the lead with three solid innings of relief work as ge allowed two hits and one walk. Petock picked up the save with two scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and struck out two batters.
The Eagles managed just four hits with Walling, Clyde, Hensley and Darren Yoder with one single each.
Bridgewater's defense also did its part as the Eagles played error-free baseball in its first game of the season.
N.C. Wesleyan first baseman J.J. Rodriguez had two of the Bishops' five hits
The Eagles are scheduled to be back in action next Saturday when they host Mount Saint Vincent for a doubleheader.
