Guilford Holds Off Bridgewater For 70-64 ODAC Victory

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College used a 10-0 spurt to break free from a 49-49 tie and then held off Bridgewater College down the stretch to post a 70-64 victory over the Eagles in ODAC men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Guilford (4-2, 1-1 in the ODAC) scored the first two points of the game, but a 7-0 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Jesse Case and DJ Caldwell gave Bridgewater a 7-2 lead and the Eagles led for the remainder of the first half.

After a layup by Guilford's Trevor Mayo, Cameron Thurston worked inside for a bucket and Caldwell knocked down another three, giving the Eagles a 12-4 lead.

The teams traded points until a 3-pointer by Thurston gave the Eagles a 17-8 advantage with 12:56 remaining in the opening half.

Bridgewater (2-5, 1-1 in the ODAC) continued to extend its lead as layups by Thurston and Efe Balfour padded the margin to 21-8 with 10:47 left in the half.

Austin Thompson and Justen Best scored hoops for the Quakers to trim the deficit to nine before BC's Kevin Saylor and Guilford's Zachary Houston traded 3-pointers as the Eagles lead stayed at nine, 24-15, with just more than eight minutes remaining.

Bridgewater took its biggest lead of the half when a Thurston 3-pointer made the score 29-15 with 6:04 on the clock. Two free throws by John Bryant and a 3-ball by Best cut the Eagles lead back to single digits, 29-20, at the 4:53 mark.

Caldwell answered with his third 3-pointer of the half to once again push the margin back to double figures at 32-20 with 4:31 left in the half. That turned out to be Bridgewater's final points of the half as the Quakers closed with an 11-0 run to trail by a single point, 32-31, at the break.

Guilford extended that 11-0 run to an 18-0 run with the first seven points of the second half to take a 38-32 lead.

Bridgewater got back on track with a three-point play by Romello Crowell to cut the Guilford lead in half, 38-35. A layup by Case made it a one-point game before Thompson hit 1-of-2 at the foul line for a 39-37 Guilford lead with 14:32 left.

On the next trip, Bridgewater regained the lead as Caldwell hit again from long range just before the shot clock expired to give the Eagles a 40-39 edge on the scoreboard.

Jumpers by Thurston and Logan Seacrist put the Eagles on top by five 44-39, but five quick points by Guilford knotted things up at 44-44 with 10:55 remaining in the game.

Guilford inched ahead 49-46 before Thurston hit 3-of-4 free throw attempts to pull the Eagles even at 49-49 with 8:06 left.

The Quakers then put together a decisive run as a 10-0 spurt put the hosts on top 59-49 with 5:44 left. The Eagles were 0-for-3 from the floor and turned the ball over twice during Guilford's 10-0 run.

The teams traded points and the margin stayed at 10 until a 5-0 Bridgewater flurry cut the Guilford lead in half. Saylor hit from 3-point range to pull the Eagles within seven and, after Guilford missed a jumper on its next possession, Keonte Dennis hit two foul shots, making the score 63-58 with 2:58 left to play.

Houston went the line and made 1-of-2 shots for Guilford before Thurston dialed up a long 3-pointer to get the Eagles to within three, 64-61, with 2:20 on the clock.

The Quakers worked the shot clock on the next possession and, with the shot clock under 10 seconds, Mayo connected on a clutch jumper to give Guilford a 66-61 lead with 1:57 left to play.

Bridgewater had two cracks at the basket on its next possession but came away empty. Caldwell missed a jumper, but Saylor grabbed the offensive board to keep possession. Case then had a good look with a floater in the paint, but his shot rimmed out and the rebound went out of bounds to the Quakers.

Once again, the Quakers worked the shot clock but this time a jumper by Will Freeman was off the mark. Mayo, however, came away with a huge offensive rebound, forcing the Eagles to foul with just 41 seconds left. Mayo hit 1-of-2 at the line for a 67-61 Guilford lead.

Thurston misfired from long range on Bridgewater's next possession and Thompson controlled the boards for the Quakers and was fouled. Thompson made both foul shots, making the score 69-61.

The Eagles had another empty trip on its next possession and then Houston made 1-of-2 foul shots for a 70-61 Guilford lead.

Thurston drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, making the final score 70-64 in favor of the Quakers.

Thurston led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points and Caldwell added 16. Thompson scored 20 points for the Quakers while Mayo, Freeman and Best each finished the game with 10.

Guilford won the contest on the glass and at the free throw line. The Quakers owned the boards by a 48-33 margin. Thompson grabbed 12 boards to go along with his 20 points while Houston added 11 rebounds. Caldwell led the Eagles with five rebounds. Guilford connected on 23-of-32 free throws for a 10-point advantage at the line as the Eagles made 13-of-20 foul shots.

Bridgewater shot 38.5 percent from the floor, making 20-of-52 shots. The Eagles continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, hitting 11-of-25 for 44 percent.
