Box Score FERRUM, Va. - Bridgewater College cut a 15-point, third-period deficit down to a single point with 1:07 left in the game, but Ferrum College held on to take an 83-78 victory over the Eagles in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon.
The two teams traded points in a high-scoring first period that ended with the Panthers holding a one-point, 19-18, lead. First-year guard Briana Moore and junior Jessica Lam carried the Eagles offense in the first 10 minutes as each scored nine points to account for all of Bridgewater's offensive production.
The Eagles trailed by as many as seven points early in the second period, but rallied to tie the score at 30-30 on two foul shots by Moore with 2:11 left in the opening half.
Ferrum's Kemani Crawford and Zarkia Mattox worked the paint for buckets before Lam hit 1-of-2 at the foul line to pull the Eagles within three, 34-31, at the half.
The hosts opened the third period with a 3-pointer by Krista Cox and methodically built the lead to double figures.
After a bucket by Moore, Mattox added three consecutive hoops for a 43-33 Ferrum lead. The Eagles responded with a 12-2 flurry to slice the lead in half. Jessalyn Monday knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cap the run, pulling Bridgewater to within five, 50-45, at the 2:54 mark.
The Panthers then reeled off the next 10 points to take their biggest lead of the game. Crawford scored the first seven points to spark the run and Lindsay Martin capped the flurry with a 3-pointer, making the score 60-45 with 32 seconds left in the third period. Oshene Kelly ended the Eagles' drought with an inside hoop, cutting the Ferrum lead to 60-47, entering the final period.
Bridgewater still trailed by double digits, 66-56, with 7:03 left in the game, but two layups by Lam and a short jumper by Burkholder pulled the Eagles back into contention, 66-62, with 5:16 remaining.
After Cox hit 1-of-2 foul shots for Ferrum, Kaitlyn Lehan and Moore worked inside for buckets, trimming the margin to one, 67-66, with 4:19 left.
Ferrum pushed its lead back to six, but the Eagles had one more run left. Trailing by five, Moore scored off an assist from fellow freshman Sydni Carey and a steal and two free throws by Lam made it a one-point game, 77-76, with 1:07 still on the clock.
Bridgewater had a chance to take the lead after a Ferrum turnover, but Moore missed a short jumper and Lam turned the ball over after grabbing an offensive rebound, giving Ferrum the ball with 56 seconds left.
Crawford was fouled with 46 seconds left and the Ferrum senior made the first of two foul shots, making the score 78-76. Crawford missed the second foul shot but Mattox came away with a key offensive rebound. Kelli Mounce made the second chance count as she knocked down a short jumper for an 80-76 Ferrum lead with 35 seconds left.
Jessi Strom's short jumper pulled the Eagles back to within two with 19 seconds left. The Eagles then fouled Mounce and it stayed a one-possession game when Mounce made just 1-of-2 at the foul line for an 81-78 Panthers lead.
The Eagles got the ball to Lam who was fouled on her drive to the basket with five seconds left. After missing the first free throw, Lam intentionally missed the second. Mounce won the battle for the rebound and then hit two free throws to finish off the 83-78 Ferrum victory.
Lam scored a season-high 25 points to lead the Eagles and Moore added a career-high 21. Kelly also reached double figures with 10 points. Crawford made 12-of-14 shots from the floor and finished with a career-high 30 points to lead the Panthers. Mattox added a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Ferrum.
Bridgewater, now 3-4 on the season, heads West on Thursday for a pair of games at the Las Vegas Hoopla even. The Eagles play Goucher College on Saturday with a game against nationally-ranked Scranton set for Sunday.
