STAUNTON, Va. - Bridgewater College hit the century mark Friday evening as the Eagles raced past Mary Baldwin College, 100-57, in non-conference basketball action.
The Eagles placed five players in double figures on the evening as they evened their record at 2-2 on the season. Jessica Lam poured in 25 points to lead Bridgewater and Cassidy Burkholder added 12. Briana Moore, Jessi Strom and Kara Campbell each scored 10 points.
Bridgewater took control early with a 33-point outburst in the first period. Lam and Strom hit 3-pointers and Burkholder scored four straight points for a quick 10-2 Eagles lead.
After a bucket by the Squirrels' Precious Parker, Strom and Lam connected again from bonus range as the lead grew to 16-4.
After a layup by Mary Baldwin's Rakeema Willis, the Eagles reeled off 17 straight points to lead 33-6. A jumper by Moore started the run and a layup by Burkholder made the score 20-6. Lam and Campbell added back-to-back threes before layups from Campbell and Gabrielle Spinner made the score 30-6. Two free throws by Jessalyn Monday and 1-of-2 at the line by Campbell pushed the margin to 33-6 with 1:53 left in the opening period.
The Eagles shot 61 percent from the field in the first period, including a torrid 6-for-8 from 3-point range.
Bridgewater finished the game shooting 48.1 percent from the floor, making 38-of-79 shots. The Eagles connected on 9-of-13 shots from beyond the arc.
The Eagles also owned the boards by a 56-34 margin. Burkholder paced the team with nine rebounds and Monday added six.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday evening when they travel to Hollins to open conference play.
