Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport was on fire from beyond the arc Wednesday night as the Captains defeated Bridgewater College, 86-49, in women's basketball action.
The Captains hit 5-of-12 shots from bonus range in the first half and added seven more threes in 15 tries in the second half to pull away for the victory.
The Eagles fell behind by double digits early in the first period, but pulled to within five, 17-12, late in the stanza on a bucket by Cassidy Burkholder. A buzzer beater by CNU's Makenzie Fancher ended the period with the Captains on top 19-12.
CNU took advantage of a cold-shooting second quarter by the Eagles to outscore Bridgewater 23-7 and take a 42-19 lead at the break.
Burkholder was the lone Bridgewater player in double figures as she led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds.
CNU connected on 42.4 percent of its shots, including 44.4 percent from 3-point range. The Eagles shot just 31 percent (18-of-58) from the floor and hit just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Captains also won the battle on the boards by a 48-39 margin. CNU grabbed 22 offensive rebounds.
Jessica Daguilh led the winners with 16 points and Jalynn Ponzo added 11. Devon Byrd and Sam Porter paced CNU on the boards with seven rebounds each.
Bridgewater, now 1-2 on the season, returns to action Friday evening when the Eagles make the short trip south to Staunton to play Mary Baldwin College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
