BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team hosted its second tri-match of the season, defeating Southern Virginia 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 13-15) and Virginia Union 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 10-25) for a three-game winning streak Saturday afternoon in Nininger Hall.
Entering the tri-match, The Eagles (6-12, 2-4 ODAC) were coming off their second ODAC win of the year with a 3-2 victory against Emory & Henry Oct. 7 at the John Rutledge King Center.
The Eagles kicked off the tri-match by facing Southern Virginia (5-15), where the team earned its first win at home.
The Knights took a 2-0 lead to start the match, before the Eagles rallied to win the match in a five-set nail biter.
As a team, the Eagles posted 61 kills, 78 digs and 58 assists.
Junior Abby Mills recorded her second straight double-double with 15 kills and 18 digs.
Sophomore Rachel Kinsey led the team in kills with 16, freshman Jenna Hamra had 44 assists and sophomore Macon Frey had 23 digs.
Deep in the fourth period, Mills hammered a kill to give the Eagles a comfortable lead 23-16 and force a fifth set.
The fifth set went down to the wire with the Eagles nursing a 13-11 advantage. Each team would exchange points until a kill from Kinsey earned the Eagles its second straight win.
The Eagles wrapped up the tri-match with a contest against Virginia Union (6-7). The team had a hitting percentage of .244, 35 kills, 32 assists, 45 digs and nine service aces in the 3-0 victory.
Kinsey led all players in kills with 10, Hamra recorded 28 assist and, Frey tallied 12 digs.
The Eagles dominated the Panthers in each set.
In the first period, the Eagles led by as many as 10 after freshman Danielle McKelvey spiked a kill to put the team ahead 19-9.
During the second set, the Eagles sparked an 8-1 run to take a cushy 20-9 lead.
The Eagles carried their momentum into the third set, giving up only 10 points to end the match.
The Eagles will remain at home in Nininger Hall for its next match against ODAC opponent Hollins on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
