Hornets Rally For 4-3 Victory Over Eagles

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Bridgewater College 4-3 Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament action at City Stadium.

The victory leaves the Hornets as the lone unbeaten team left in the tournament. The loss sends the Eagles to the loser's bracket where they will play the survivor of the Lynchburg vs. Randolph-Macon game. Bridgewater will be in action Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Bridgewater scored all of its runs in the top of third inning. With one out Nick Fulk singled and moved to second on a single by Zach Hynes. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Bryan Sanderson walked to load the bases. Justin Petock then singled up the middle to score Fulk and Hynes for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead. After Brendan Howell struck out, Bay Liskey singled home Sanderson to make the score 3-0.

Shenandoah answered in the bottom of the third with a run on a sacrifice fly by Billy Arens to pull the Hornets closer at 3-1.

From that point Bridgewater starter Kyle Henshaw and Hornets started Michael Scimanico matches zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth.

Corbin Lucas walked to lead off the eighth for the Hornets and Nolan Overby followed with a single to left, ending the day for Henshaw. Lucas was out at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Michael Paul, leaving the Hornets wtih runners at first and second and one one out against Eagles relief pitcher Ryan Leake.

Dan Powers singled to left-center scoring pinch-runner Connor Malloy to make it a one-run game. Leake struck out Daniel Freshley but Joe Bittner came through with a clutch two-out single to score Paul with the tying run.  Powers scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, sending the Hornets to the ninth with a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles threatened in the ninth against Shenandoah closer Matt Riegler. With one out, Kenner Berry walked and Tyler Hoffman followed with a single to right. Darren Yoder hit a fly ball to right for the second out, but Riegler hit Fulk with a pitch to load the bases. The Hornets closer earned the save by retiring Hynes on a grounder to short to preserve the 4-3 victory.

Each team finished with eight hits. Hynes led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Overby and Powers had two hits apiece for the Hornets.

Henshaw finished with a no-decision after limiting the potent Shenandaoh offense to three runs, two earned, on seven hits in seven innings on the mound. The senior struck out four and walked one.

Scimanico picked up the win with an eight-inning effort. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking two.
