LYNCHBURG, Va. – Bridgewater College remained unbeaten at the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament by holding off Lynchburg 4-3 in a game that ended well past midnight.
With the victory, the Eagles face a quick turnaround as they will play No. 1 seed Shenandoah Saturday in a battle of the two remaining undefeated teams in the tournament. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Shenandoah turned back Washington and Lee on Friday by a 6-3 score to stay in the winner's bracket.
For the hometown Lynchburg team it was a case of missed opportunities. The Hornets stranded 15 runners on the bases as the Eagles pitchers were able to work out of difficulty throughout the game.
Bridgewater scored in the bottom of the first to give starter Corey Armentrout an early lead. Nick Fulk led off the inning with an infield single and moved to third on a one-out single by Bryan Sanderson. Justin Petock's single through the right side of the infield scored Fulk for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Eagles posted their second run. Fulk and Ryan Leake led off with back-to-back hits and both moved up a base on Sanderson's sacrifice bunt. Zach Hynes delivered a clutch two-out hit, scoring Fulk to make it 2-0.
Armentrout was constantly in trouble as the Hornets put the leadoff batter on base in each of the first five innings.
Lynchburg finally got to Armentrout with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Drew Taylor doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a balk. With two outs Rob Tomasulo walked and Dustin Arrowood followed with a double to right to put Lynchburg on the scoreboard. Wil Parsons worked Armentrout for a walk to load the bases with two outs and that ended the night for the Bridgewater lefty.
Eagles' coach Curt Kendall summoned freshman Jordan Showalter from the bullpen and the lefty struck out pinch-hitter Jay Kenyon on three pitches to end the inning.
Bridgewater added some insurance with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Fulk led off with a single but was erased at second on Leake's sacrifice bunt attempt. Sanderson then reached on an error with Leake advancing to third on the play. Leake scored on Petock's groundout and Sanderson scored on a base hit by Hynes to put the Eagles on top 4-1.
Showalter retired the first two hitters in the eighth before singles by Taylor and Lincoln Evans and walk to Joe Rogers loaded the bases. Rob Tomasula then singled to right,, scoring both Evan and Taylor to trim the Eagles lead to 4-3. Robert Gallet entered the game for the Eagles and hit Arrowood with a pitch to load the sacks. Gallet worked out of the jam by striking out Parsons to preserve the 4-3 lead.
Lynchburg threatened again in the ninth. Pinch hitter Pat Harris led off with a single and pinch-runner Pat Katona moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Joe Tomasula then hit a hard grounder up the middle that Gallet got his glove on. The Bridgewater pitcher picked up the ball behind the mound and threw out Katona at third for the second out of the inning. Gallet struck out Taylor for the final out to earn the save in Bridgewater's 4-3 victory.
Armentrout struck out a season-high nine batters in 6.2 innings to pick up the win. He allowed one run on eight hits and walked four batters.
Fulk led the offense with a 3-for-3 night at the plate and he scored two runs. Hynes was 2-for-4 with with two RBIs and Petock also drove in a pair of runs.
With the victory, Bridgewater improved to 28-11 on the season. Lynchburg, now 24-12, will play Randolph-Macon at 2:30 Saturday afternoon in an elimination game.
