Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Bridgewater College erased a 5-2 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth and then held on in the ninth to edge Washington and Lee, 10-9, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference ODAC) baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
Bridgewater (16-7, 8-3 in the ODAC) nicked W&L starter Tom Concklin for a run in the top of the first inning. With two outs and nobody on, consecutive hits by Bryan Sanderson, Justin Petock and Zach Hynes put the Eagles on the board.
Washington and Lee (13-8, 6-6 in the ODAC) tied the score with a run in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Drew Weprinksy and the teams traded runs in the fifth, making the score 2-2.
Darren Yoder led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle and moved to second on Hunter Hensley's sacrifice bunt. Yoder raced home on Nick Fulk's single to right as the Eagles regained the lead, 2-1.
Nick Biumi led off the Generals' half of the fifth with a single and continued to second on an error. Biumi moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Colton Campbell, tying the score at two runs apiece.
W&L took its first lead of the game with three runs in the sixth. Weprinsky led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Kyle Witty put runners at the corners with just one out. Biumi struck out looking but Keegan Dolan followed with a three-run homer to left center, giving the Generals a 5-2 advantage.
The Eagles rallied in the seventh against the Generals bullpen. Yoder led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double to left by Hensley. Yoder scored on Fulk's infield single, trimming the W&L lead to 5-3. With runners at first and second, Derrik Walling put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Hensley to third and Fulk to second. Sanderson walked to load the sacks and Petock was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run to make the score 5-4. With the bases still full, Fulk trotted home on Hynes sacrifice fly to center, tying the score at 5-5. Bay Liskey walked to reload the bases and a passed ball allowed Sanderson to score from third as the Eagles regained the lead. Petock then scored when Steven Woerner's grounder was misplayed for an error, giving Bridgewater a 7-5 edge.
Bridgewater padded its lead with three more runs in the top of the eighth. Hensley singled to lead off the frame and Fulk followed with a walk. Walling was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Sanderson delivered a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hensley for an 8-5 Eagles lead. With runners at the corners, Walling was thrown out trying to steal second, but Fulk raced home on the play to increase the Bridgewater lead to 9-5. Later in the inning, Cavin Clyde singled through the right side to score Petock, building the Bridgewater lead to 10-5.
W&L was far from finished as the Generals crept closer with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Weprinsky and Josh Josephson opened the inning with singles and each moved up a base on Witty's sacrifice bunt. Weprinsky scored on a sacrifice fly by Biumi and Josephson crossed the plate on Dolan's single to left, cutting the Eagles lead to 10-7.
The Generals threatened in the ninth, but their late bid came up a run short. With one out, Andrew Head singled and Luke Myer followed with a single up the middle. The Eagles then went to the pen for Kyle Henshaw to face Weprinsky. The Generals outfielder hit a grounder to the mound and Henshaw threw to second, retiring Head for the second out. With runners at the corners, Henshaw then hit Josephson with a pitch to load the bases. Witty followed with a base hit to right, scoring Weprinsky and Head. Josephson was trying to go from first to third on the hit, but the W&L runner lost his footing as he was heading to third and Zach Hynes took the relay from the outfield and threw to third where Clyde tagged Josephson for the final out of the game as the Eagles escaped with the 10-9 victory.
The Bridgewater bats continued to show signs of life as the Eagles produced double-digit hits for the second straight game. One day after collecting 15 hits in a victory over Shenandoah, Bridgewater added 13 hits against the Generals.
Hynes was 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles offense. Fulk, Petock, Yoder and Hensley added two hits each. Fulk and Hynes each finished with two RBIs.
The Generals pounded out 16 hits with Weprinsky leading the way with a 4-for-5 day, three runs scored and one run batted in. Dolan also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Witty added a pair of hits as all nine batters in the lineup managed at least one hit.
Bridgewater starter Dillon Via pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Tyler Slanovec picked up the win, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Henshaw recorded the final two outs for his second save of the season.
Concklin pitched well in his start for the Generals as he allowed just two runs on seven hits in his six innings. Three W&L relievers, however, combined to give up eight runs, six earned, on six hits in the final three frames.
