BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College salvaged a split in Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Roanoke College by winning the second game 12-2 after falling in the opener 10-2.
Kyle Henshaw turned in a strong performance in the second game to pitch the Eagles to the victory. Henshaw allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings on the mound. He struck out five and walked one to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Eagles (24-8, 12-4 in the ODAC) posted Henshaw to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. With two out and no one on base, Bryan Sanderson singled and scored on Justin Petock's double down the left field line for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead. Zach Hynes followed with a double to the same spot, scoring Petock to make it 2-0.
Bridgewater broke the game open with four runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth.
Derrik Walling walked with one out in the third and Sanderson followed with a single to put two runners on. Petock followed with a single to center, chasing Walling home to make the score 3-0. Sanderson scored on an infield error and Petock crossed the plate on Cavin Clyde's fielder's choice grounder, pushing the lead to 5-0. Tyler Hoffman capped the inning with a run-scoring single for a 6-0 Eagles lead.
Bridgewater tacked on four more runs in the fourth against the Maroons bullpen. Roanoke reliever Rawlings Cumbea walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. Petock then hit a one-hopper back to the mound, but Cumbea's throw home pulled the catcher off the plate, allowing Nick Fulk to score from third, making the score 7-0. Walling scored on Hynes' fielder's choice groundout and Sanderson trotted home on a run-scoring single by Bay Liskey pushing the margin to 9-0. Hynes scored on a groundout by Clyde, giving the Eagles 10-0 lead.
Sanderson singled in a run in the fifth to put the Eagles up 11-0 before the Maroons nicked Henshaw for a run in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Boonewell Hagy led off the seventh with a single for the Maroons and moved to second on a groundout. A single by Lucas Nowlin put runners at the corners with one out. Hagy scored on Gavin Pellitteri's grounder to second as the Eagles were unable to turn the potential inning-ending double play.
The Eagles got the run back in the home half of the seventh. Fulk doubled to lead off the inning and was replaced on the bases by Ryan Fitzgerald. Sanderson plated Fitzgerald with a single up the middle, making the score 12-1.
Roanoke added a run in the ninth for the final 12-2 margin.
Sanderson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Eagles 13-hit attack. Fulk and Petock were both 2-for-4. Fulk scored twice and Petock added two RBIs and two runs scored.
In the opener, Roanoke (12-16, 5-11 in the ODAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and the Eagles never recovered.
Devin Cassity led off the first with a single and singles by Will Black and Jacob Clifton loaded the sacks with no outs. Will Decker's single drove in the first run and Cam Cassady then cleared the bases with a three-run triple, making the score 4-0. Bridgewater starter Corey Armentrout struck out Kevin Oakey for the first out of the inning and retired Collier Donald on a fly ball to Fulk in right field. Cassady tried to score on Donald's fly but was out at the plate on a perfect throw home by Fulk to end the inning.
Bridgewater had its best chance to work its way back into the game in the bottom of the third inning as the Eagles opened the frame with back-to-back singles by Hunter Hensley and Fulk. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Walling and Hensley scored on Sanderson's single to the hole at short, trimming the lead to 4-1. With runners at first and second, Roanoke catcher Will Black threw out Sanderson at second on the back end of a double steal for the second out of the inning. Roanoke starter Cameron Holshouser then retired Petock on a grounder to third to leave the inning still on top with a 4-1 lead.
Roanoke padded its advantage with two runs in the fifth. Cassity was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position by swiping second. Black then put down a sacrifice bunt and was safe at first when the throw from Armentrout hit Black in the shoulder. Cassity scored on the play and Black ended up at second. Black then scored on Jacob Clifton's double down the left-field line, giving Roanoke a 6-1 advantage.
The teams exchanged runs in the sixth as the Maroons maintained a five-run advantage. Black's RBI-single gave Roanoke a 7-1 cushion, but the Eagles answered in their half of the sixth with a run-scoring single by Hynes, making the score 7-2.
The lead was more than enough for Holshouser as he shut the Eagles down the rest of the way to notch the complete-game victory. The righthander allowed just six hits in his nine-inning stint. He walked two and struck out two. Fulk was the only Bridgewater batter with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4.
Bridgewater is back in action Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles travel to Eastern Mennonite for a conference contest at 4 p.m.
