BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College improved to 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's tennis action with a 5-1 victory Friday over Randolph College in a match that was played to decision.
The Eagles led 2-1 at the completion of doubles action.
Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins turned back Patricia Verdezoto and Alison Henry 8-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles' first point. At No. 2 doubles, Marla O'Bryan and Brittany Wilson defeated Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet 8-3.
Randolph scored its lone point at No. 3 doubles when Heather Parra and Sarah Parker held on for a close 9-7 victory over Jessie Mitchell and Whitney Cash.
Bridgewater swept the first three singles flights to clinch the match victory.
Gordon outlasted Verdezoto in splits sets to win at No. 1. Gordon won the first set 6-3 while Verdezoto claimed the second set by the same score. A tiebreaker was played to decide the match with Gordon prevailing by a score of 10-6.
Hawkins took a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Henry while Wilson edged Velazco 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles flight.
The Eagles, now 5-2 overall, are back in action Sunday afternoon when they host Guilford in ODAC action. The match is set to begin at noon.
