BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Three Washington and Lee pitchers combined to limit Bridgewater College to two runs Friday as the Generals picked up a 5-2 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball action.
Bridgewater loaded the bases in the bottom of the first against Generals starter Kyle Tipping, but managed to push across just one run.
With one out, Derek Walling tripled to the gap in left center and Tipping walked both Bryan Sanderson and Justin Petock to load the sacks. Walling scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Brendan Howell, but Tipping then retired Zach Hynes on a pop fly to shallow left field to end the inning and avoid further damage.
W&L (10-6, 3-4 in the ODAC) tied the score with a run in third against Eagles starter Robert Gallet. Nick Biumi reached base with a one-out single to center. With two outs and Biumi still at first, Gallet hit Colton Campbell with a pitch. Taylor Rowe then bounced a single through the left side of the infield to score Biumi with the tying run.
The Generals took the lead with two runs in the fourth. With one out, Drew Weprinsky reached on an infield error and Jon Swenson followed with a single to right center. Both runners raced home on Kyle Witty's double to the gap in left center, giving W&L a 3-1 lead.
Bridgewater got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the fourth. Ryan Leake singled with one out and the inning was prolonged when Hunter Hensley reached on a two-out throwing error. Nick Fulk delivered a single to center, scoring Leake and cutting the W&L lead to 3-2.
The Generals manufactured a run in the seventh to extend the lead. Witty walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on Biumi's sacrifice bunt. Keegan Dolan followed with a run-scoring single to left for a 4-2 W&L lead.
Washington and Lee tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Luke Meyer led off the inning with a single and, with one out in the books, stole second. Swenson delivered a two-out hit to left to chase home Meyer, putting the Generals on top 5-2.
Tipping worked the first six innings to pick up the victory. The righthander allowed seven hits and both runs, but just one run was earned. He struck out one batter and walked three. Two W&L relief pitchers combined for three hitless innings to close out the victory. Anderson Baldy worked the seventh inning and Cory Smith pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Gallet was saddled with loss to even his record at 1-1. He worked six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Rowe and Swenson had two hits each and Witty drove in a pair of runs to pace the Generals' eight-hit attack. Bridgewater had seven hits with seven different players getting one hit.
Bridgewater (11-7, 5-3 in the ODAC) returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Guilford College for an ODAC doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
