FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College opened its men's tennis season on Sunday with a pair of losses to regionally-ranked opponents. The Eagles lost 9-0 to Mary Washington and 7-2 to Christopher Newport.
Mary Washington got off to a quick 3-0 start by sweeping play in doubles action. The closest match came at No. 3 where Brandon Larsen and Drew Hubble lost to Andrew Curtis and Brandon Griffin 8-4.
At No. 1 doubles Evan Charles and Stratton Gilmore stopped Bridgewater's Mike Cable and Christian Lynn, 8-1. At No. 2, the Eagles tandem of Kyle Hartfield and Sam Churchill fell to Alex Blahkin and David Lunding-Johansson 8-2.
Hartfield had the best showing in singles as he took Griffin to three sets at the No. 2 flight. Griffin rolled in the first set, but Hartfield evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Griffin won the deciding set 6-3.
At No. 1 singles Charles took a 6-1, 6-3 verdict over Larsen. Lunding-Johansson stopped Lynn 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 while Curtis downed Churchill 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. Scott Buie defeated Cable 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Alex Cragg finished off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Robert Belton at No 6.
Christopher Newport swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead over the Eagles in their match. Steve Boslet and Sam Thomson downed Cable and Lynn 8-2 to get things started at No. 1. Joona Rahko and Chiraag Shetty defeated Hartfield and Churchill 8-4 at No. 2 and Michael Dodd and Arttu Fiva stopped Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff 8-4 in the third doubles match.
Bridgewater picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 6 in singles play. At the top flight, Larsen rolled past Shetty 6-2, 6-1 while Drew Hiubble needed three set to turn back Rahko at No. 6. Hubble won the first set 6-3 before Rahko rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3). Hubble took the match by winning the third set 1-0 as he won the tiebreaker 10-4.
Boslet took down Lynn 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Thomson held off Rishcoff at No. 3 singles. Thomson won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) and closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Fiva defeated Churchill at No. 4 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and Dodd took a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Cable at the No. 5 singles flight.
