LEXINGTON, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team opened its spring season Monday against nationally-ranked Washington and Lee and the Generals defeated the Eagles 9-0.
W&L, ranked No. 22 in the nation and No. 6 in the region, gave up just one game in the three doubles matches and then swept the singles matches, all in straight sets, to close out the 9-0 victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins fell to Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland 8-0. W&L's Meghan Buell and Chelsea Mixson defeated Brittany Wilson and Marla O'Bryan 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and Kelsey Vella and Allison Hupalo ousted Jessie Mitchell and Holly Knupp 8-0.
Meighan opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gordon at No. 1. Bridgewater's Hawkins had the best showing in singles play, losing the Mixson 6-2, 6-3 at No.2.
W&L's Brooke Donnelly downed Wilson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Hupalo defeated O'Bryan 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Vella stopped Bridgewater's Knupp 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Genny Francis downed Mitchell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Salisbury University.
