Cold-Shooting Eagles Come Up Short At Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – Bridgewater was unable to overcome a cold-shooting second half Saturday afternoon as the Eagles lost to Emory & Henry, 79-67, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball action.

The Eagles trailed by just two points, 32-30, at the half, but following intermission Bridgewater made just 12-of-40 shots attempts for 30 percent. That included a 1-for-10 mark from 3-point range.

While the Eagles were ice cold in the second half, the Wasps were red hot. The hosts made 19-of-31 field goal attempts for 61.3 percent in the second half.

The score was tied three times before a 3-pointer by Courtney Puckett put the Wasps on top 9-6. Holly Morgan scored for the Eagles before Megan Jacoby hit 1-of-2 at the line for a 10-8 Emory & Henry lead. Heather Cantrell then worked the paint for a bucket to tie the score 10-10 with 13:55 left in the first half.

Two buckets by Karina Farr put the Wasps ahead 14-10, but the Eagles stayed close and a jumper by Cassidy Burkholder and two foul shots by Rebecca Reifsnider tied the score at 19-19 with 7:16 left on the first half clock.

Farr hit two fouls shots, but Jessica Lam countered with a bucket for the Eagles to tie the score at 21-21. The Wasps' Anna Green and Bridgewater's Jessi Strom then traded 3-pointers to keep the score tied at 24-24.

After the teams traded empty offensive possessions, the Eagles took the lead for the second time in the first half when a layup by Morgan made the score 26-24.

The lead didn't last long as a 3-pointer by Tenesha Connor and two foul shots by Puckett gave the Wasps a 29-26 edge with 3:24 left in the half.

A layup by Molly Shelley made it a one-point game and an inside basket by Oshene Kelly put the Eagles back on top 30-29 with 1:08 left in the half.

Once again, the Wasps turned to the long ball as a 3-pointer by Jacoby sent Emory & Henry to the break with a 32-30 lead.

Bridgewater struck first in the second half when a layup by Burkholder tied the score, 32-32. Green and Shelley traded buckets before a 3-pointer by Kristie Langley put the Wasps ahead 37-34.

The teams traded points until a 17-3 run put the Wasps comfortably ahead, 58-41. Amanda Stanley scored two buckets and JoBeth Wright added a layup, making the score 49-40 with 13:39 remaining. Cantrell scored for the Eagles, but Stanley hit a jumper to keep the lead at nine, 49-40. After Shelley made 1-of-2 at the line, the Wasps reeled off nine unanswered points. A three-point play by Jacoby pushed the lead to double digits and a layup by Puckett made the score 54-41. Puckett and Farr each scored from close range to cap the Wasps run, making the score 58-41, with 10:44 left.

The Eagles closed the margin to 10 with 2:56 left on buckets by Lam and Strom, but the Eagles could get no closer as the Wasps closed out the 79-67 conference victory.

Cantrell just missed a double-double as she led the Eagles with 17 points and nine rebounds. Shelley scored 15 points and Morgan finished with 11.

Emory & Henry placed four players in double figures, led by Langley with 20 points and Farr with 18.

Bridgewater is now 7-15 overall and 5-9 in the ODAC. Emory & Henry is 6-16, 4-9 in the conference.

The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is 6 p.m.
