Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - Bridgewater's Zach Hunter knocked down a jumper from the right elbow with less than a second left in the game to lift the Eagles to a 46-44 victory over Washington and Lee in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday afternoon.
Washington and Lee tied the score when Andy Kleinlein drained a long 3-pointer with seven seconds left. The Eagles quickly inbounded the ball to Hunter and the Eagles point guard pushed the ball upcourt and hit the game-winning shot from the right side, just inside the foul line.
Points were at a premium for both teams as defense dominated. The Eagles made just 18-of-55 shots for 32.7 percent while the Generals made just 13-of-46 for 28.3 percent. Bridgewater hit 5-of-15 from beyond the arc while Kleinlein's late 3-pointer was the only shot made from bonus range by W&L. The Generals were 1-of-15 from 3-point range. W&L stayed in the game from the foul line where they made 17-of-30. Bridgewater attempted just eight foul shots, making five.
Bridgewater, winners of three straight after losing its first two games of the season, owned a slight advantage on the boards, 42-38. Freshman forward Logan Seacrist grabbed 10 rebounds and Ed Reddick added nine for the Eagles. Reddick, who missed most of the first half after picking up two quick fouls, scored 11 points and freshman Marcus Curry also scored 11.
Clayton Murtha led the Generals with 19 points and nine rebounds. Joe Sherwood added 10 points.
With Reddick sidelined with foul trouble, the Eagles had trouble scoring in the first half. The Bridgewater defense, however, was up to the challenge as it limited the Generals to just five first-half field goals. The Eagles took a 21-19 lead on Curry's 3-pointer with 1:01 left in the half and took that two-point margin to the locker room at the break.
Bridgewater opened the second half with a 9-3 spurt to open up an eight-point lead.
Murtha hit 1of-2 foul shots to pull the Generals within one to open the second half, but Reddick powered inside for his first points of the game, giving the Eagles a 23-22 lead.
Murtha scored on a 10-footer before Reddick and Keonte Dennis worked the lane for back-to-back baskets and a 27-22 lead. After W&L misfired at the offensive end, Aaron Adams tallied from long range to put the Eagles up 30-22 with 16:45 left in the game.
Murtha and Stephen Himmelberg scored back-to-back baskets for the Generals, but a Curry 3-pointer and two free throws by Reddick gave the Eagles their biggest lead, 35-26, with 13:17 remaining.
Bridgewater still led by nine, 43-34 on a Curry jumper with 6:16 left, but that would be the Eagles final bucket until the game's final second.
The Generals whittled away at the deficit and a layup by Joe Sherwood trimmed the margin to 43-37 with 3:45 remaining.
Sherwood added a free throw at the 1:55 mark and Murtha hit two foul shots with 1:22 left to make it a one-possession game, 43-40.
Murtha hit the front end of a two-shot trip to the line to trim the margin down to two, 43-41, with 55 seconds left. Murtha missed the second foul shot and Reddick controlled the rebound for the Eagles.
The Eagles worked the shot clock down, but Reddick missed a short jumper with 22 seconds left. Reddick, however, grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on his putback attempt. The Eagles senior hit the second of two foul shots to put the Eagles up 44-41 with 19 seconds left.
Himmelberg missed a 3-point try with 16 ticks left but Murtha corralled the offensive board and kicked the ball back out to Kleinlein who knocked down the game-tying jumper. Hunter then dribbled the length of the floor and rattled in the game-winning shot with eight-tenths of a second left.
The Eagles are now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC while the Generals drop to 2-6, 0-2 in the conference.
Bridgewater is back in action next weekend when the Eagles host the BC/Don Glick Classic. The Eagles play Greensboro on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Mennonite and Milligan meet in the opener Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.
