Eagles Even Record With Victory Over Mary Baldwin

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College evened its overall record at 3-3 with a 78-37 victory over Mary Baldwin College in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Nininger Hall.

The Eagles used a 14-0 run early in the first half to push the lead to double figures and continued to pull away for the comfortable victory over the Squirrels.

A jumper by Jessi Strom and two free throws by Jessica Lam gave the Eagles a quick 4-0 lead before the Squirrels got on the board with a short jumper by Imani Hill.

Lam scored on a driving layup before buckets by Hill and Ayanni Seay pulled Mary Baldwin even at 6-6.

A free throw by Hill gave the Squirrels their only lead of the night before the Eagles started pulling away with a 14-0 run that made the score 20-7. Oshene Kelly powered inside for a bucket to ignite the run and two free throws from Heather Cantrell put the Eagles up 10-7. Lam and Cassidy Burkholder scored on shots from the paint and a layup by Kaitlyn Lehan gave the Eagles a 16-7 lead. Jessalyn Monday added four straight points for a 20-7 Bridgewater advantage with 11:16 left in the first half.

Bridgewater outscored the Squirrels 18-8 during the remainder of the half to lead 38-15 at the break.

All 12 Bridgewater players broke into the scoring column with four players reaching double figures.

Lam led the Eagles with 13 points while Burkholder filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and a blocked shot. Kelly scored 10 points and Monday recorded the first double-double of her young career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman center Lehan also had a productive night with eight points, five blocked shots and four rebounds.

Seay paced Mary Baldwin (0-6) with 11 points.

The Eagles held a commanding 55-33 advantage on the boards and shot 46.9 percent from the field, hitting 30-of-64 shots.

Bridgewater returns to action Saturday afternoon when it travels to Lexington, Va., to play Washington and Lee University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
