Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. - Maryville's Alex Bond made the second of two free throws with two seconds left in the game Friday evening as the Scots escaped with a 70-69 victory over Bridgewater College in the first round of the Pat Deacon Classic hosted by Transylvania University.
Bond's free throw spoiled a spirited Eagles comeback in the second half that wiped out a 14-point Maryville halftime lead.
Maryville controlled play early and a jumper by Rachel Hawn gave the Scots their first double-digit lead, 17-7, with 8:56 left in the first half.
The Scots continued to pad the lead and the margin grew to 20 points, 37-17, on a 3-pointer and a short jumper by Bond. Bridgewater then put together a 10-2 spurt to shave the margin to 12. Three-point plays by Cassidy Burkholder and Jessica Lam trimmed the margin to 14 and a jumper by Burkholder knocked the deficit down to 12, 37-25. Maryville's Joanna Young and the Eagles' Burkholder traded hoops before a jumper by Long sent the Scots to the break with a 41-27 lead.
Two free throws by Lam and an inside bucket by Oshene Kelly trimmed the margin to 10 in the opening minute of the second half.
The margin was still 10 with 15:14 left in the game, but a 3-pointer by Burkholder and a jumper by Jessi Strom sliced the margin in half, 49-44, with 13:49 to play.
The Maryville advantage stayed between four and eight points until a layup by Lam made it a two-point game, 60-58, with 4:52 remaining. Jordan Ballard knocked down a 3-ball for the Scots, but Burkholder hit from outside to make the score 63-60. Young tallied from inside for the Scots before Lam's three-point play pulled the Eagles back to within a bucket, 65-63 at the 3:15 mark.
The teams traded empty trips before the Eagles pulled even with 2:20 to play on two foul shots by Kelly. After Bond missed from in close, Heather Cantrell hit two foul shots to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, 67-65, with 1:39 left.
Ballard missed a 3-pointer that would have put the Scots back on top and Burkholder controlled the rebound. The Eagles worked the ball inside and Kelly scored off an assist from Burkholder to put the Eagles up 69-65 with 59 seconds on the clock.
Bond scored on a jumper and, following a Bridgewater turnover, Ballard scored from inside to tie the score at 69-69 with 38 seconds left.
The Eagles worked the shot clock but Burkholder missed a short jumper and Ballard controlled the defensive rebound. The Scots put the ball in the hands of Bond and she was fouled with two ticks remaining. She missed the first foul shot, but made the second to lift the Scots to the one-point victory.
The Scots, listed among the teams receiving votes in the latest D3hoops,com Top 25, improved to 6-1 on the season. Bond finished the night with 20 points to lead the Maryville offense. Ballard scored 12 points and Young added 11.
Burkholder connected on 10-of-17 shots and led all scorers with 24 points. Lam tallied 18 and dished out five assists while Strom added 10 points and six assists.
Both teams shot lights off from the floor. Bridgewater made 26-of-48 shots for 54.2 percent while the Scots were 29-for-53 for 54.7 percent. Bridgewater made 60 percent of its shots in the second half, canning 15-of-25 attempts.
The Eagles won the rebounding battle by a 27-21 margin with Jessalyn Monday leading the team with six boards.
Bridgewater, now 3-5, will play in consolation game Saturday against Blackburn College. The Beavers lost to the host team, 16th-ranked Transylvania, 95-58 in Friday's second contest.
