BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Brian Maye put Shenandoah ahead with a late, second-half goal and the Hornets held off Bridgewater College for the final 12 minutes to take a 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer action.
The victory was the first of the season for the Hornets in conference play as they improved to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the ODAC.
The loss was the third straight for Bridgewater and evened the Eagles record at 3-3 in the conference while dropping their overall mark to 4-9.
The Hornets struck first with a goal in the 34th minute. Caleb Baxter, who had just entered the contest, took a throw-in and his pass connected with Eduardo Santiago for a shot. Santiago's shot rolled just inside the far post, across the goal line and out of the reach of Bridgewater goalkeeper Kevin Morris to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Shenandoah maintained the 1-0 lead until the 66th minute. Bridgewater was awarded a corner kick and the ball bounced off a defender toward Eagles' midfielder Joey Riesett. The Eagles freshman took the ball out of the air and hit his shot past the Shenandoah keeper Matthew Poell into the right side of the goal to even the score at one goal apiece.
Shenandoah regained the lead when Brian Maye possessed the ball at the offensive end. Maye carried the ball toward the top of the box where he spun away from a defender and ripped a shot from 18 yards out to put the Hornets on top 2-1 with 12:41 left to play.
The Hornets looked to put the game away moments later when Santiago and Nick Strait fired consecutive shots on goal, but Morris stonewalled each attempt to keep the margin at one goal.
The Eagles kept strong pressure on the Hornets defense down the stretch with two corner kick opportunities and three shots, but they were unable to score the equalizer as the Hornets escaped with the 2-1 victory.
Bridgewater held a slim 14-13 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. Ben Lewis led the Eagles with four shots, including two on goal.
Bridgewater's Morris finished the contest with four saves while Shenandoah's Poell turned away five shots.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday at noon when the Eagles host Randolph College in ODAC action.
