Bridgewater Blanks Hornets For Eighth Straight Victory

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles posted their eighth consecutive victory with a 2-0 shutout win Wednesday evening over Shenandoah University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer action.

The Eagles applied pressure early with three corner kicks and a pair of shots by Anna Theisen. Shenandoah goalkeeper Erin Septer saved one shot while Theisen's second shot was blocked by a defender.

Bridgewater got on the board with its next shot as Mari Marotta netted her first goal of the season at the 19:36 mark to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles had a chance to add to their lead in the final two minutes of the half, but Septer turned away a shot by Keri Rager to keep it a one-goal game at the break.

Bridgewater came out strong in the second half with a pair of shots from leading scorer Julia Baca. Septer was up to the challenge on the first shot and the second shot sailed high.

The third shot proved to be the charm for Baca as she found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute. The goal was No. 14 this season for Baca.

Shenandoah moved on to the attack following Baca's goal and quickly earned a corner kick. Catherine Major took the corner for the Hornets and her ball found Elizabeth Bellido in the box. Bellido's header was on target but Bridgewater keeper Krista Kelly was in position for the save.

The Hornets kept possession in the offensive end, but Kelly made the save on a shot by Danielle Burns and a shot from Bellido sailed wide.

In the final 30 minutes, the Eagles took seven shots, compared to just two for the Hornets, as Bridgewater finished off the 2-0 victory.

The Eagles posted a 16-6 edge in shots and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Kelly finished the contest with three saves for the Eagles while Septer recorded five saves for the Hornets. The shutout was the seventh straight for the Eagles. Bridgewater has not allowed a goal in more than 700 minutes.

The Eagles, now 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the ODAC, return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Virginia Wesleyan in a key ODAC matchup.
