BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team continued on its winning path Saturday afternoon with a decisive 5-0 victory over Randolph College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
The Eagles established a new program record for consecutive wins as Saturday's victory ran the team's current winning streak to seven in a row.
The shutout was the sixth straight for Bridgewater. The Eagles have not allowed a goal in 620 minutes of action.
The Eagles took control early with a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes. Bridgewater scored first off a corner kick. Michelle Viegas took the corner and hit a low, driving ball that rolled into the box where Nikole Blackwell hit a shot from 15 yards out to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Julia Baca got behind the WildCats defense and hit a shot from 18 yards out. Randolph keeper Quinn-Lynn Bates made the save, but the ball bounced right back to Baca and this time she didn't miss as her shot sailed into the open goal for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
The rest of the half featured a slew of missed opportunities for the Eagles. Bridgewater fired off 18 more shots before the end of the first half, but was unable to add to its goal total.
The Eagles made it 3-0 just one minute into the second half when Baca found Anna Theisen open at the top of the box. Theisen chipped a shot just over the keeper's head and under the crossbar to score.
A pair of freshmen teamed up for the next score when Sarah Brennan took a pass from Grayson Mathews and fired a shot inside the near post to make the score 4-0.
Bridgewater added its final goal in the 71st minute off of another corner kick opportunity. Alycia Giauque took the corner and sent a low ball into the box and Kelly Patterson converted the goal for the final 5-0 margin of victory.
The Eagles finished with a 44-1 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. Keri Rager led the Eagles in shots with six, including three shots on goal. Baca put three of her five shots on goal for the Eagles.
Three keepers shared minutes for the Eagles as Krista Kelly, Hayley Talbott and Haley Carter all saw action.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles travel to Winchester, Va., for a 7 p.m. contest against the Shenandoah University Hornets.
