BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College edged Randolph-Macon, 5-4, Sunday afternoon in women's tennis action to improve its ODAC record to 5-2 and its overall record to 12-3.
The Eagles took the lead 2-1 after doubles play and that proved to be the difference as the teams split the six singles matches.
Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan took an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Macon's Angelina Sportelli and Olayemisi Ogunshina while Miranda Donovan and Rita Murphy edged Mackenzie Nunnally and Morgan Parkes 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Randolph-Macon won its point at No. 2 doubles where Caty-Betz Holcomb and Courtney Owens held off Jessie Mitchell and Olivia Stone 8-5.
Gordon and O'Bryan rolled to convincing wins at the top two singles postions. BC's Gordon won 6-1, 6-1 over Sportelli while O'Bryan took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Owens at the No. 2 spot.
The Eagles needed just one more point to clinch the match and they picked up that point at No. 5 where Donovan won it split sets over Parkes 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Ogunshina downed Bridgewater's Mitchell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Holcomb edged Stone at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6. Jane Oh took Macon's final singles point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jamee Hardison at No. 6 singles.
