Women's Lacrosse Loses Close Battle Against Lynchburg, 15-14

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – A back and forth offensive battle between the Hornets and the Eagles resulted in a Lynchburg win as the Hornets picked up a 15-14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.  

Lynchburg's offense exploded in the first half and took an early 3-0 lead as they scored three unassisted goals in the first five minutes of play.

Paige Hennessy cut off the streak as she notched a man-down tally with 24:31 on the clock to make the score 3-1.

The Hornets responded with three more goals before Bridgewater head coach Kim Lowry called a timeout.

Katie Freeman came out of the timeout and scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 6-2 with 18:31 left in the first frame. Lynchburg put away three more goals to boost its lead to 9-2 before Bridgewater replicated the offensive barrage.

Hennessy sparked a 4-0 run for the Eagles as she snuck a Jordyn Hutchins helper past the keeper with 10:20 remaining in the first half. Bafford scored a free position goal to cut the lead to 9-4 with 6:44 on the clock.

Freshman Jesse Colligan netted a goal with 3:01 remaining in the first frame, followed by a Chamberlain tally to cut the Hornets' lead to 9-6 heading into the break.

Coming out the intermission, Chamberlain notched another goal, this time off an Audrey Kordek pass with 26:35 on the clock.

Lynchburg responded with a Kendall Atkin goal before Bafford stuck a shot past the keeper off of a Hutchins pass to make the score 10-8.

With 19:53 on the clock, Lynchburg tallied another goal, but freshman Caroline Fletcher sparked a 3-0 Bridgewater run to answer. Fletcher scored an unassisted goal with 19:10 remaining in the game. Chamberlain scored back-to-back goals, one of which was from the free position zone, locking the game at 11-11.

Lynchburg's Adkin and Carley Dobson scored two more goals in response, but Bafford fired a shot into the back of the net to cut the Hornet lead to 13-12 with 7:37 left in the second half.

The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game, but Bridgewater was unable to gain a lead.

Bri Slate notched a goal for the Hornets, only to be matched by a Bafford free position tally with 4:36 left in the game to make the score 14-13.

Lynchburg scored its final goal of the game before Fletcher netted a goal with 2:13 on the clock to cut the lead back down to 15-14.

For the remainder of the game, the Hornets played a strategic game of keep-away as the Eagles continued to put up a defensive fight, but fell in a close game, 15-14.

In the cage, Laura Reynolds turned away eight Hornets shots as she picked up the loss.

For Lynchburg, Hailey Bossert tallied nine saves in the cage off 23 shots.

Bafford stood out statistically for the Eagles as she scored four goals, picked up four ground balls, earned three draw controls, and caused three turnovers. Chamberlain also notched a four-goal game, while Hutchins chipped in two assists on the afternoon.

Adkin and Caroline Kilby led the offense for the Hornets with three goals apiece.

Bridgewater is back in action this Wednesday as it takes on Sweet Briar at home. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
